What's your life's dream?

Recommended Posts

You see' date=' the biggest problem with the line of thought you've mentioned is that it assumes the "American dream" and all the prosperity out there is just handed to you, or that you're somehow the victim of luck. The fact is that it can only come from hard work, and no one ever promised that it would be easy! America is the land of opportunity... not the land of handouts

quote']

yes thats my point everything that i want has to come through hard work...but hard work specified by society...i understand rules and such and they are required but life is so mundanely predictable and one sided.......do as society requires or get out

i think that socially required conformity blemishes an individuals dreams..no matter how far fetched...as you said with rapist and criminals..my opinion and the general populations opinion is that what they do is wrong-no argueing there...but those criminals have personality disorders, most likely anti-social...they are screwed up in the head...but normal people dont always have the possibility to work their asHes of for grand hopes and dreams...

and who ever said being a child is not a good choice...there are many who believe that even though there are aspects of life to be mature about, looking at things like a child (with thei simplicity, curiousity, potential, and happiness) can help. alot of people think that the child mind is beautiful and the adults a tainted rag of predetermined and preassigned rules..yea lol...something in that nature...

i think my questioning of society's structure, purpose, and discipline is essential to making it better. i understand that everyone must conform..in some way...and that is what i dont like..if one doesn't conform they are looked at as stubborn and stupid and immature.

Okay, sure.... so you have a computer with internet access. Is that something you truly need? Who are you to tell people what they need or don't need? I have some things because I want them... what's wrong with working hard to get them if you want them? People shouldn't be restricted to the bare essentials... and that's the American dream. Try living in a different oppressed country for a while... I know a few Cubans really well who actually understand this, and who can't sit back comfortably after being in Amercia their whole lives and critcize our hard earned wealth and prosperity. LEARN TO LOVE IT, and grab a piece of the pie!

Who really needs a Hummer? Who needs those grossly oversized SUVs? Who needs luxury cars? Why would someone need a $2 million summer home? If you're going to go the "turly need" route, at least be smart about it. A computer with Internet access is hardly expensive, which I CLEARLY said. Our education system has failed since you didn't acknowledge the word expensive. >_>

Sure, but why is that so important? It doesn't mean you have to... and it doesn't hurt you in any way! Get over it!

These people make decisions for us. They are our leaders, our Senators, even our President! So yes, it DOES hurt me. And no, I will not just "get over it."

Oh yes it is. It's pointless if it just embitters you and gets you nowhere.

Maybe I just hold the opinion but function like a conformist (that's gothic, but whatever)... or is that too much for you to fathom?

You need some level of conformity dude... not total dominance, but you have to learn to live and compromise with other people. You can't do what you want, when you want, no matter what, regardless of what you "feel" inside. Hence the maturity aspect of this I talk about- you need to learn to master and control those feelings, or society will reject you... and guess what? IT'S YOUR FAULT.

-_-" Dude. You're not listening. On a personal level, you can... well, should be able to... think and feel how you want. It's you, not anyone else. Besides, I specifically said we have laws to govern outward behavior.

Master and control. You sound like a ****ing martial arts teacher. There's nothing to master. All you need is some self-control to be able to co-exist and compromise like you said but that would be a group level, a societal level... not personal, which is what I'm alluding to.

 This after calling me a mindless drone for disagreeing with you! I have absolutely no problem with your opinion on this- I just think it's wrong. Not horribly wrong, and I don't think you're an idiot, but I just think it's a bit off. Nothing personal.

Hey, I think you're a bit off so I guess we're even... so to speak.

Yes control, as in dont let your inner self get the best of you when its not appropriate.

You have to conform or be cast out. Thats the way the bones roll.

But keep your inner self who you are. You can still be you, but if 'you' happen to want to, say, jump off a building ans fly, well you cnat do that. If 'you' want to drive 180 on the freeway, thats not a good idea either. The governement is here to preserve civilization and society. Not to overpower it and make us a bunch of mindless drones. You can still be yourself without needing to be all about outwardsness with it. Keep it to a medium, so others can take you for what you are and not be overloaded all of the sudden by the _____ (insert name) that htey never knew. No one is saying you have to have a certain mentality about everything, but some things must be accepted as the norm, if we are to keep civilization on its feet and keep anarchy back where it belongs.

"TOM SAWYER"

A modern-day warrior

Mean mean stride,

Today's Tom Sawyer

Mean mean pride.

Though his mind is not for rent,

Don't put him down as arrogant.

His reserve, a quiet defense,

Riding out the day's events.

The river

What you say about his company

Is what you say about society.

Catch the mist, catch the myth

Catch the mystery, catch the drift.

The world is, the world is,

Love and life are deep,

Maybe as his skies are wide.

Today's Tom Sawyer,

He gets high on you,

And the space he invades

He gets by on you.

No, his mind is not for rent

To any god or government.

Always hopeful, yet discontent,

He knows changes aren't permanent,

But change is.

What you say about his company

Is what you say about society.

Catch the witness, catch the wit,

Catch the spirit, catch the spit.

The world is, the world is,

Love and life are deep,

Maybe as his eyes are wide.

Exit the warrior,

Today's Tom Sawyer,

He gets high on you,

And the energy you trade,

He gets right on to the friction of the day.

I basically agree with you about the hummer, but who are you to say that those willing to waste the money shouldn't have it?? Leave them be! It doesn't effect you! If you have the means and want a $2 million summer home, then why the hell shouldn't you buy it? You worked your ass off, you did what was necessary, and now you can afford it! It's your money! I personally don't like that kind of extravagance, but it's not my place to decide what others do with their money! Oh, and nice low blow insulting my intelligence there at the end . Very mature.

These people make decisions for us. They are our leaders, our Senators, even our President! So yes, it DOES hurt me. And no, I will not just "get over it."

You just had to sneak a little baseless Bush attack in there, didn't you ? Now listen- I believe absolutely that our leaders should be held to a high standard of morality. It's ironic that you attack Bush without real reason, but are so damn quick to defend Clinton... but that's another point for another time. Now what I was talking about earlier was some businessmen and the like who are slimey people but succeed because they're willing to sacrifice their morals. THEY don't effect you, and it sounded like you were bitching about them. People in public office are a different story.

Maybe I just hold the opinion but function like a conformist (that's gothic, but whatever)... or is that too much for you to fathom?

Again with you attacking my intelligence... geez dude. Can you learn to discuss things without stooping to personal attacks? Anyway... my point here is that a bad attitude can be crippling, whether you really notice or not. Cynics very often get tied up in their own negativity, and it really takes the wind out of their sails. That kind of attitude is just pointless.

Martial arts teacher? Come on dude. My point was simple. Those who fail to master themselves (not BS martial arts, just reality- calm down) turn into absolute messes. If you let your emotions and impulses dominate you, you become a murderer or rapist, or extreme sociopath like that. You have to force yourself to conform to society to the extent that you can function. It's not crushing your free spirit, and it's not really too much to ask, frankly.

I of course see that every person has a sinful nature inherently, and we have to fight it at every turn, but you'll probably refuse to understand that point.

Hey, I think you're a bit off so I guess we're even... so to speak.

Hooray! I think he finally understands the premise of civil debate! :D

I'm saying it's a waste of money and rather silly, not that they can't spend their money in the way that they see fit. However, some of them have not worked their asses off. They lied and cheated their way into the money that they posess.

Dude, it's not just Bush. It's any of them that have made shady deals or been sleazy. That includes Clinton and even famous presidents like JFK. But you do realize that big business runs everything, don't you? They are the true leaders but that's another point for another time (had to rip that one from ya).

I'm keeping my attitude, whether or not you agree with it. Yeah, I'm negative about certain subjects and this happens to be one of them but that doesn't mean people like me don't function well. Most of us are just fine.

Dude, master yourself is so what a martial arts teacher would say. >_>

If someone becomes a sociopath, FINE! Deal with him then. Maybe we don't need him out on the streets. If he's that mentally unstable, he's going to cause trouble regardless of how much you make him conform.

I of course see that every person has a sinful nature inherently, and we have to fight it at every turn, but you'll probably refuse to understand that point.

Wrong. Refuse to acknowledge. Difference. >_>

Okay, now this really pisses me off. How dare you say that every wealthy person lied and cheated their way into wealth? What is wrong with you? That's just a pathetically skewed and needlessly bitter view of the world. You are absolutely wrong about that.

Fair enough... but keep in mind that the vast majority of successful people are optimistic and hard working (I'm not saying you're not hard working, just that those 2 factors are always important. You generally need both of them... negativity has a way of sapping your strength).

Dude, master yourself is so what a martial arts teacher would say. >_>

Oh I know! Trust me, I do not want to sound like a martial arts teacher... sadly, I just had no other way of saying it.

If he's conforming, he's not causing any trouble. My point is that expecting people to not cause any trouble is forcing a level of conformity. Frankly I think we see eye to eye on this, but forums are such a limited medium.... there's only so much you can say in text and emoticons

Wrong. Refuse to acknowledge. Difference. >_>

Fair enough... but would you care to define "closed-minded" for me? kthx.

He didn't say that at all. He said:

However, some of them have not worked their asses off. They lied and cheated their way into the money that they posess.

To top it off, he's not wrong. There are people out there who will scam, lie, steal and cheat their way to the top. And those are the people who are unfourtunatly ruining it for everyone else.

To say that you have to be increadibly naive, BWare.

Fair enough... but keep in mind that the vast majority of successful people are optimistic and hard working (I'm not saying you're not hard working, just that those 2 factors are always important. You generally need both of them... negativity has a way of sapping your strength).

A major contradiction to your previous statement if I ever saw one, I must say.

Fair enough... but would you care to define "closed-minded" for me? kthx.

I don't see anything wrong with being close-minded when it comes to religion. Keep in mind that not -all- of us here are close-minded. But seeing as we've all (repeatedly I might add) stated our views on Religion, let's not go down this path again, alrighty?

Acerz caught this one for me but you don't pay attention. I did specifically say that some are willing to lie, cheat and steal their way to the top. I realize fully that there are plenty of honest, hardworking people.

I always work hard... even at my piece of **** job, I work hard. I do the best I can but I'm still as negative as you can be. Maybe I'm proof you can be productive and cynical at the same time...

Oh I know! Trust me, I do not want to sound like a martial arts teacher... sadly, I just had no other way of saying it.

I know and it makes me laugh. :P

He might conform to your behavion but that doesn't mean he won't have the same emotions. His mindset will still be the same, making him unstable. These are the kinds of people that shoot up KMarts or their previous place of employment after being canned. All I'm saying is that outward behavior does not always represent the emotion hidden within.

Fair enough... but would you care to define "closed-minded" for me? kthx.

I won't acknowledge it since I already know the inherent evil in mankind and it's not necessary in this conversation.

i think i started this so im gonna say um...you guys both have points..its all relative

also i want to say that i understand and respect the pressure from society and i do conform enough for now at least. the problem for me is that i feel society is and will be more difficult to assimilate to.

(FUNNY analogy)its like a maze for a lab rat with cheese and a wheel at the end/and maybe a babe rat lol..with some cheese on the way to keep the rat strong...but the walls of the maze are too high for the rat to climb and take short cuts...and the longer the rat takes the smaller the walls get..so the rat cant beat the maze so he joins it and follows the most obvious path, which hinders his intelligence..does anyone see logic in this analogy because i see it crystal clear....

@Acerz: you mention a contradiction, but... what?? I really don't see what you're talking about.

To say that you have to be increadibly naive, BWare.

To say what? Dude, you're really not making any sense. I agree that there are some scumbags out there- it's unavoidable- but I would argue that the majority- in America at least- are honest, hardworking people. I say this for a number of reasons, including personal experience.

About Fenring's comment, I missed the "some." My apologies. But I still don't believe that the scumbags are "ruining it for everyone else." The system is FAR from ruined.

Oh, and about the "contradiction" you cite... I said this:

How dare you say that every wealthy person lied and cheated their way into wealth? .... You are absolutely wrong about that.

...and this:

Fair enough... but keep in mind that the vast majority of successful people are optimistic and hard working

...and you call that a contradiction? Wow... reading comprehension skills not up to par?

@Fenring:

Acerz caught this one for me but you don't pay attention. I did specifically say that some are willing to lie, cheat and steal their way to the top. I realize fully that there are plenty of honest, hardworking people.

Fair enough, and I agree. Just don't let the scumbags get to you... it's out of your hands.

I always work hard... even at my piece of s*** job, I work hard. I do the best I can but I'm still as negative as you can be. Maybe I'm proof you can be productive and cynical at the same time...

Fine then- whatever works for you. But you have to keep the cynicism in check though and not let it kill you- I know plenty of people who are crippled by their own cynicism, and life just basically sucks for them.

I won't acknowledge it since I already know the inherent evil in mankind and it's not necessary in this conversation.

Meh, fair enough. But you did just acknowledge it. :P

Do you take everything as an insult? I was just pointing it out. Yeesh. As for being out of school for a full year, yes, my reading skills are probably out of kilter. Please don't insult my intelligence when I never intended to insult yours.

As for these scumbags? The fact that they got to the top through sheer greediness and often illegal activities practically does ruin it for those who do put in the effort to get rewarded for their hard work.

Sorry dude- didn't mean to insult your intelligence. Contradictions really bother me, so I get very annoyed when I'm accused of them- especially when I was consistent

As the old saying goes, "virtue is its own reward." Corny as it may be, it is true that it's much more satisfying acheiving something when you've done it legitimately. And as I've said, don't let the scumbags get to you! They're morons, so let them be morons! Most people out there are doing just fine, (some some of them incredibly well) as honest, hard working people. Don't let the few scumbags out there get to you.

Actually, it takes real skill to be able to connive the way some of these guys do. I don't condone that behvaior but you should already know that by now. All I'm saying is that even liars and thieves have to be good at what they do to succeed as well.

See, the thing is BWare, it does get to me that people can con their to the top. That really bothers me. It shouldn't, you're right, but it does. More often than not some honest Joe will get ****ed because of these scumbags.
