"Fast, Fluid Gameplay!!"

Recommended Posts

OK it's another bitching thread on how C&C 3 should remain faithful to the Saga but hear me out here.

I'm a little concerned over EA's statement that C&C 3 should have "Fast, Fluid Gameplay". It seems to be that we could be in for another C&C Generals type game where we'll be churning out tanks until the cows come home in as little as 15 minutes!

My point? In order to achieve fast, fluid gameplay (apart from build times) you need a steady and heavy amount of resources entering your account. This is not true to the C&C Tiberian Saga Canon and if done, will piss off certain hardcore community members such as myself.

My worry is actually that EA may attempt to create the C&C Generals style of resource gathering where vehicles load up quickly, then deposit the whole amount in less time then it takes to blink. Now as you all know, Tiberium resource gather has the following pre-requisites.

  • Tiberium harvester must take approximately 60 seconds to fill to max capacity based on standard green grade Tiberium.

[*] Tiberium harvester carrys exactly 700 credits worth of Tiberium for green and 1000 credits for blue.

[*] Once harvester visits Tiberium Refinery, and offload time of approximately 30-35 seconds is initiated, in which time no other harvester can dock with the refinery in use.

[*] According to gameplay mechanics. During the transport process an empty harvester must not exceed or travel slower than an TD GDI medium tank, and upon fully loaded must travel on average 1/3 less speed due to excessive weight of the Tiberium on board.

These are just the main elements of resource harvesting. My worry is now that EA might decide to ignore these Canon facts as well as allow the player to upgrade the refinery by building more loading bays. All I can say to EA is, don't even think about it!!!

There have always been specific timings to the way resources are harvested in previous C&C games. Adopting even the Red Alert style of offload timings would not be right and a Generals method would just be a crime worse than murder.

The speed factor is there for a reason, and that's to prevent an inner base outbreak of Tiberium should the harvester or refinery malfunction. It was a small gritty detail never discussed by Westwood, but to C&C Canon rules, it ties in with the storyline realism of the game.

What do you guys think about the resource element of "Fast, Fluid, Gameplay", and how do you think it extends to other gameplay mechanics?

Sounds like it will be Red Alert style, which, in all seriousness, kicks major ass. Honestly, I don't mind if multiplayer is fast and furious. That's how it should be! If singleplayer is anything like Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2, I will be very disappointed as the last THREE offerings have had lackluster singleplayer campaigns.

Anyway, if you take into account the change in technology, many issues would have been overcome with time. It's simple progression, which would make sense with progressive technology, especially ones related to Tiberium.

C&C is already fast and fluid, I think he is going to stick with what worked best

I agree with King, though it's not just resource management that contributes to the 'fast, fluid gameplay' of Generals. It's also the ability (which in most cases, is essential) to expand your base across half the map in the first five minutes. Also being able to churn out multiple buildings/tanks/infantry at the same time is also a main contributor (and something that has been confirmed, I believe).

Well, they're going back to the conyard system, which I hate, now that I've played generals, EAW, BFME, etc... :(
