Not in any way that you'd really notice it. The American people are a bunch of fearful, ignorant sheep. They'd be okay with getting ****ed if it creates the illusion of security. All the bull**** paraded around in the name of Homeland Security is meaningless. It's there for one thing and one thing only: the illusion of safety; the illusion of security.

 

So, yes, I'm cynical. Yes, I distrust the government. Yes, I'm very, very negative. And I have no reason not to be. I look at everything going on and ask myself why no one steps up and truly questions actions and motives... why we have such stupid people on both sides of the fence.... why people are so complacent... It infuriates me to see people accepting this so readily. Seems that's what you get with the current consumer culture.

I, in fact, do not like AT ALL the government interfering with our daily business. Almost from the time our country was founded, the government has been eating away at states' rights, until now, they can do about anything over the states. Case in point, the senate:

 

Two senators from each state were originally elected by each state legislature, which meant that those elected would be veterans of politics, wiser, and elected by representatives familiar with what was good for the state

 

However, the 17th Amendment to the United States constitution changed that:

 

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state, elected by the people thereof

 

Now, instead of being elected by the wisest in the state, for the purpose of protecting the state's (and therefore the people in each state's) rights, and preventing the federal government from controlling the state's business

 

People, most of whom didn't follow politics closely at all, instead of picking the person most suitable for the US senatorial post, would just pick who they liked the best.

 

These new senators, not caring (nearly as much, at least) about the right of their respective states to self-government, let pass many laws, like:

 

Laws that passed blanket rules over the entire country.

 

For example, the states were supposed to take care of their environments. Well, when one state didn't, congress passed a law that created the EPA, and ending the state's rights to govern in that matter.

I agree wholeheartedly with you here. Now before BWare shows up and starts arguing his side, let me point out a few things. Beowulf calls this an "illusion of security" and I have to agree. The measures put forth werent all that effecient at detecting and stopping terrorism. Hiring "rent-a-cops" for extra security is NOT a way to keep people safe, as well all of the airport security recruitment adds on the radio. I happen to know that the training they put you through to work the metal detectors is not all that thorough, nor can it be, lest we raise taxes, but that makes people mad at the administration.

 

So we sacrifice security of reality for the security of illusion and the security of those particullar officeholders keeping their jobs and popularty. All politicians are guitly of these traits, all of them want more power, more money, and half could care less what actually happens as a result of their boneheadedness. And as far as complacent people go.....they shout out a hell of a lot when you raise taxes to defend the nation, they dont like it, but as soon as something bad happens, they'd jsut as soon rip your head off for not "funding security" properly...people are stupid. This is why we have governments to help us run ourselves, unfortunatly, in this day and age, many aspects of government are so corrupt they loose their efficiency. This is especially rampant in the US (look at all the party politics, all they do is rip on each other and lie) Britian (OMG he follows BUsh, DIE!!) and the EU (France complaining of other people's ignorance, Germany afraid to go to war to defend the free world etc)

 

Government is a great idea, but the people who run them, as well as the subjects, seem to be getting worse as a whole as the years progress. Its a downward spiral, and frankly, I have no idea how we would get out of it. Granted, its like the apocalypse or anything, its perfectly feaseable to live a nice decent life in this day and age, but Im jsut afraid that if something should happen (Like idk, Iran saying that they'll move their army into southern Iraq for "peacekeeping) then we all just might be ****ed over.

What we really need is a congress not afraid to revamp the law system to how the founders envisioned it in the constitution, i.e. only congress is supposed to make laws, NOT the president or supreme court

Unfortunatly, like Communism, while it sounds great, people in Real Life are greedy and afriad and prone to be irrational. Such is how things are run.

 

Of course, the elections are probably the worse, but we strive to choose the lesser of two evils. Granted, not everyone has an aura of evil about them, but whens the last time a presidential or congressional candidate actually satisfied anyone 100%?
