Well I hate the cartoony gfx, but I love the gameplay mechanics shown in the videos. The backgrounds and creeps and doodads were cool. I'm surprised noone has talked about the incredible amount of detail in the teaser trailer. It's freakin awesome! It's a reminder that CGI cutscenes, when done correctly (read expensive) can be very impressive... as much as I enjoyed the live FMV in C&C3.

I'm still a big fan of starcraft & broodwar... it's a LAN favourite for sure. No question I would be pre-ordering today if it were possible.

They have the history of balanced gameplay, and I'm really looking forward to the next version of this.

Funny how it's Starcraft 1.5 v Command & Conquer 1.5.

;p

p.s. the hero unit (mothership) made me think about the counterstrike economy balance. It would be intersting if a RTS campaign could be affected by the economics of the campaign. ie... use lots of zealots - then they become expensive as your reserves are depleted, but more powerful like a slimline PS2 as you refine the training process.

p.s.s. I wonder if you could take your galactic map onto the grand scale? Using EAW as a frame of refernce. Where certain planets (like Bespin) are captured fund your entire economy - it could work like an oil derrick ingame I guess. This would mean that your expansion base in a skirmish map would actually be another planet on the galatic map. Then you would have a chance to garrison your income producing planet like building defense around expansion base.

p.s.s.s. random quote for the day...

"When you go to a restaurant on the weekends and it's busy they start a waiting list. They start calling out names, they say "Dufrane, party of two. Dufrane, party of two." And if no one answers they'll say their name again. "Dufrane, party of two, Dufrane, party of two." But then if no one answers they'll just go right on to the next name. "Bush, party of three." Yeah, but what happened to the Dufranes? No one seems to give a s***. Who can eat at a time like this - people are missing. You ******s are selfish... the Dufranes are in someone's trunk right now, with duct tape over their mouths. And they're hungry! That's a double whammy. We need help. Bush, search party of three! You can eat when you find the Dufranes.

Only just got around to watching the gameplay videos. The Protoss seem pretty nasty really. I see they get a few new and more interesting units, though kinda disappointed didn't see much of the Terrans and the Zerg. But yeah that mothership is a hell of a lot better than the one they got in C&C3, so is that walker... Is it just me or are all teh games have these "walker" units all of a sudden?

I smell conspiracy! :P

heheheh, yeah, i think it all began with the half life 2 strider......then quake 4 put in a strider copy, crysis has one.......eventually the disease spread to RTS.........C&C3, Supreme Commander, Universe at War and now Starcraft 2. love the physics effects on the starcraft walker tho.

Hmph. I credit War of the Worlds. These walkers (at least most of them) look like the alien tripods.

Anyway, back to SC2. I'm gonna buy it as soon as it comes out. I mean, it looks good enough. Gameplay will matter the most, though.

Late 2008 - 2009 timeframe.

But this is Blizzard, who have a habit of just pushing timelines, even cancelling subpar games.. (Starcraft:Ghost) :(

From Wikipedia:

StarCraft: Ghost was a planned tactical action game for video game consoles developed by Blizzard Entertainment and set in the same science fiction milieu as its popular StarCraft title. Blizzard announced the game in 2002, but on March 24, 2006 announced it would "indefinitely postpone" development[1]. Soon afterward, Blizzard removed StarCraft: Ghost from its list of games currently under development, and deleted the official Ghost home page; the URL for that page now redirects to Blizzard's Web site[1]. As of now, its status is in question, and many fans and analysts, including gaming websites such as IGN, are predicting that it has been canceled. However, as of 6/1/07 BestBuy.com is still accepting pre-orders for the game, with an expected release date of 6/15/2007.

Blizzard, a game developer mostly known for computer games, was taking a step in a different direction by producing Ghost exclusively for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 video game consoles. Instead, they have now chosen to reorient themselves on the seventh generation consoles. Earlier, a GameCube version was also planned, but it was already canceled in November 2005. Many in the gaming community were under the assumption that the game was being developed by Blizzard when it has in fact been a third-party project since its inception, starting with Nihilistic (Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption) and officially moved over to Swingin' Ape Studios (Metal Arms: Glitch in the System) in July 2004. On May 16, 2005, Blizzard Entertainment acquired Swingin' Ape Studios, and in March 2006 they announced that StarCraft: Ghost was on indefinite hold.

Well, Blizzard has a history of near perfect games... SC II will be good, that I'm sure... Fans waited so long for this game to be announced, so long that Blizzard really has to deliver all the goods or suffer... Our wrath.

Yup. Warcraft 3 has only about 7-9 patches, all addressing very minor glitches and adding new content... That's as close to perfect you can get in the software biz.

i think blizzard makes some pretty good games, of course at the moment SC2 looks like crap cus there isnt much....yet remember they are still working on it, they wont just have a few units, that will prob have around 5-6 ground units and possibly about 3 diff tanks on each side, and aroudn the same for aircraft. they are still making it, they havent dissapointed us yet have they?

Actually, I'm far from disappointed. By announcing Starcraft 2, Blizzard fulfilled an old wish of mine, a sequel to end all game sequels... I'm not just after the game itself, I want to learn what happened after the Brood Wars, Raszagal's death, Kerrigan's Ascencion, etc.

Why tamper with what is perfect? SC2 should just continue the story with better graphics and minor unit changes.

Blizzard seems to want to get SC players off of SC and onto SC2 and dump the support of SC. I mean they can get new people and keep the old ones with SC2 so more people and that means supporting SC2 over SC would be more efficient.

Gens, ZH & C&C 3 have obvious glitch here & there but its difficult to spot in SC & WC. yay to blizzard. hope that this time blizzard will not restrict on units production.

It's the limited resource that makes Warcraft and Starcraft unique... Makes you think of intelligent ways of spending money, not throw it away on useless stuff...

the reason why they have a population limit is because if you make a massive army and attack your opponent, game will slow down. just like C&C 3 someone attacks with a million pods, it slows game down when they move. so to stop such lag during game, they made a population limit, i know its stupid but its smart

I've never had a problem with populations limits as long as the limit you have can't go down permanently in the middle of the game. Rise of Nations is a great game, but the mechanics of it let you increase your population limit if you build certain structures (usually called "Wonders") and when they are destroyed, your population limit goes down so that if you have 230 units and your limit is 250 but goes down to 200, you're pretty much screwed. A lot of games have this kind of setup, but the difference is that you can rebuild those structures and get back your population space, but unfortunately you couldn't in Rise of Nations which was one of the things I didn't like about it. Anyways, the population limit is always a good idea (especially in Multiplayer) so long as you can control it.

Now I'm wondering how C&C3 would play out with a pop limit?

I don't think it would be too much difference, because the games are quick and short.

ie. pop caps not reached.
