Tiberium First Impressions Preview at GameSpot

Recommended Posts

At GameSpot they have posted one of their usual first impressions articles. Obviously this one focus on Tiberium. This article covers some stuff we already know and reveals a little bit more. It also confirms that Tiberium is powered by a highly modified version of the Unreal Engine. Here is one sample.....

Longtime C&C fans will also be interested to hear that Tiberium will also delve into the lore of the franchise like few games before it. For instance, the roots of the GDI and its rival, the evil Brotherhood of Nod, will apparently be explored for the first time. It is essentially a conflict, as Plummer explained, between science and faith. It all revolves around the arrival of Tiberium, an extraterrestrial element that has the ability to transform any matter that it comes into contact with into itself. When Tiberium becomes a powerful resource, it becomes the source of conflict. Not surprisingly, exploitation will be the theme of the game.

With regard to technology, the game is being built atop a highly modified version of the Unreal Engine. But though the game is still quite a ways from completion, there are still plenty of details to be learned about Tiberium, from the multiplayer component to more details about the gameplay. Still, there's plenty of time; right now, it sounds like Tiberium will ship for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 either late this year or early next. The exact date is still to be determined, and Plummer said that the game will ship "when it's done."

Once your done reading you can look through the 50+ screen shots and art. Click here for the full preview.

It'll probably be out next year I'd imagine. If anything holds this game up, it will be the Playstation 3.

Another game I'm following is Frontlines: Fuel of War. It's a first person shooter from Kaos studios (who were once employees of DICE), that utilises the UT3 engine in the exact same way with strategic elements, squad command, and modern sci-fi. And as far a squad command and first person shooters go, it's my most anticipated of 2008.

Anyway, Frontlines: Fuel of War was also originally in development for the PlayStation 3 as well, although THQ announced just 5 days ago (just as the game is about to go Gold) that the PS3 version had been cancelled!! The reason given was that the Unreal Engine 3 has proven rather difficult to adapt to, (and work with) the PS3... So I wouldn't have PS3 owners getting too excited about Tiberium coming to their consoles just yet, unless in house EA developers can figure out the problem that ex-DICE Employees couldn't.

The PS3? Honestly, the PC is much better for FPSs....even though Halo, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty were mainly for consoles, if you've ever played a game on pc vs. console, you'll notice the PC is better for playing them

Add to the fact that almost all of the C&C games have been for PC (many PC only), and I'm not sure where you're pulling the "PS3 holding up Tiberium" from

I don't think I've explained myself properly. I meant in the terms of release date.... the PC and 360 version may be done, but any difficulty converting the PS3 version will hold up the game from shipping for it's target release date...

I'm not holding by breath, and I'm not getting excited. I kinda mentioned Frontlines earlier, because what I'm seeing in Tiberium, is what I already see in Frontlines.

However where Frontlines can manage up to 64 players at any given time.... this feature where you can bring your own squads into your Multiplayer games has sparked some interest. If EA can just get 32 players max in a game and each player can bring into a game say 3 squads of 4 units per squad (1 infantry, 1 vehicle and 1 air squad) plus yourself as the commando squad leader (therefore 13 units per player). That's a whopping 416 units on a 32 player map!

And let's be honest if that's possible... then by anyone's standards.... that would be one friggin Epic Multiplayer game!

But I'm jumping the gun right now.

Btw, theres also an article at IGN, with the gameplay vids separately, but prolonged, in which you can hear story-related unit responses, and se the actual gameplay which is pretty nifty. Highly recommended!

Saracen: Well, right now theyre planning 8 players (As in RTS) with each team having 6 infantry squads (Consisting either of 4 or 2 members) + aircraft, mechs and tanks (And these are only the units we know!).

Sounds pretty awsome to me :)

(I know im getting excited, but Tiberium really gets better with every info i read/view. Like that units are granted a leadership bonus when youre around!)

Has anybody ever heard of the business cycle? Well if you have them im sure you'd be able to undestnd what I'm talking about, its called the EA Cycle. It applies mostly to cnc fans and its happening again! Here it is:

EA announces a new cnc game, they hype it up; they exagerate everything and ignore tough questions

V

Cnc fans (most of them) get over excited and overlook reality and the past; only positive reviews are released

V

On release day the game gets extremely high ratings and everybody who brought it loves it.

V

For about 1 week the fans are 100% happy, EA makes lame excuses for the flaws pointed out by the realistic community members

V

After at least 3 months fans realize the crapyness of the game but EA releases 1 patch and lame excuses, nobody reads the change logs

and the feel all is well and dandy. But the wise ones are on to them. They may also release gimics to distract people from the main issues.

V

Finally the game is bad again because people realaize that some of the changes were done half asses and not thought-out

V

EA is in a panic the fans are angry and not taking their crap, to distract fans the announce the release of a new game and Apoc Bs's some more to satisfy

the people; the cycle repeats.

something quite boring

I'm more interested in the revelation that your character can call infantry reinforcements, mech reinforcements, aircraft reinforcements... but most likely cannot enter the vehicle if the mechs are indeed 'robotic' in nature. Which seems to be a considerable backward step for a FPS.

Also thinking through the tiberium spike dynamic which leads to Battlefield control point gameplay, and reduces possibility of base-kill or Renegade C&C mode. Which is dissapointing.

(I just read the 11 pages of comments at Gamespot, and I was suprised to see that it's 80-90% positive and hopeful, and not boring ea-bashing)

It is surprising, isnt it?

And both your fears have been proven true, but i dont even care! Games with vehicles are dime a dozen.
