Just under a month until Windows 7 hits the retail market. Will you be making the upgrade? If your currently using the RC version vote anyway.

Probably sometime next year. I'll see how buggy things are at first.

I AM on a fully activated Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit NOW! XD

P.S. How should I vote?

Your running the RC so you will need to upgrade to retail eventually right.

As for me, I'm about 90% decided about making the upgrade on release day. Staying with the Home Premium version.

Windows 7 has fewer versions than Vista - Home, Pro and Ultimate. Pro would be the best best.

However, until I can afford, XP/Vista for me.

I ran the latest build, RTM, since i was made public, and i must say it beats Vista my far...

No problems with any applications i use, Vista always had problems...

I've Blue Screened my 64 Bit Ultimate RTM version (with full legitimate retail license) twice already :P

Despite this, it's basically the best Windows operating system to date.

I am really eager to upgrade to 7 but I'll have to check the prices first. Although I suppose sooner or later my desire to max out my RAM and switch to a 64bit OS will get the better of me. Ooh and one of those ATI 5800 cards for some DirectX11. *drools*

I suppose that means probably in 2010 just because of my patience. Unless my parents feel charitable this Christmas when I go home for break.

-edit- Although I'm keeping XP on a different hard disk and dual-booting in any case.

Hang on for the upcoming ATI behemoth HD5870X2 or even the speculating HD5890!

I just pre-ordered my copy of Windows 7 :)

Pre-ordered yes, paid not yet.... there is a difference you know. Stock is going to be limited into New Zealand I feel. I'm buying via Ascent and they have this note on their order page....

Please note: Pre-order now to avoid disappointment! Due to limited stock availability and high demand, only pre-orders placed on or before 8th of October will can be guaranteed to ship for the 22nd October release date. While we will do our best to supply all pre-orders after this date, there may be delays in the shipping of orders placed after October 8th. Due to tight restrictions imposed by Microsoft, all pre-orders will ship on October 22nd, for delivery October 23rd. We can't guarantee delivery on the 23rd, but we will ensure we do everything possible to supply.

Anyway, I've ordered Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I just hope I've made the right choice switching to 64bit now. It will be used on this system.

  • CPU: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 GHz
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5QL-E
  • RAM: 4 GB Corsair DDR2800 Dual Channel
  • Video Card: EVGA 9600GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E
  • HDD: Western Digital 640 GB SATA2 & External eSATA Seagate Barracuda 320GB SATA2
  • PSU: 500w Silverstone
  • Monitor: LG Flatron W2252TQ 22" LCD (Widescreen)

Time to join the 64bit club, Sonic! How much is this pre-order Win7? more expensive?

Perhaps later in time you should upgrade a new Nvidia GTX 3xx graphics card once its out next year and recycle this 9600GT as a dedicated PhysX card.

Its $NZ217.70 for either 64bit or 32bit.

64bit: http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecificati...x?ItemID=382323

32bit: http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecificati...x?ItemID=382321

When I place my order late last night I originally ordered 32bit but then did some thinking and decided I should go with 64bit instead. Cancelled the 32bit order and placed another order for 64bit. I check this morning and the bastards have already charged me.... for both of them!

As for the video card. Its fine for now. All my gaming is done on the Xbox 360, the only PC game I'll end up getting in the next 6 or so months is C&C 4. Purchasing a new video card would be a waste of money right now.

Vista Fails, period.

People purchased Vista for two reasons, DirectX 10 support for hardcore gamers, or simply fallen into the trap.

I've had absolutely no problems with Vista. The only thing I truly despised was the User Account Control. A few clicks of the mouse fixed that. None of my games suffered any performance issues, all my apps worked perfectly. Overall Vista works fine.

Vista's launch was awful though, no driver support was the biggest issue but thankfully I never had when it was first released. Didn't get Vista until July 2008 when I built my current system.

DirectX 10 was hardly a selling a point, so I disagree with your comment there. I'd say most people obtained Vista buy purchasing a new PC or laptop. It will probably be the same for Windows 7.

I was actually going to switch to Vista as part of my upgrade on my current rig but I saw an OEM W7 for about $34 more so I decided that would be my purchase instead. I wanted Vista so I could use all 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit OS. :P

I don't think you can get the full 4 GB of RAM using Vista 32bit. I know I can't.

Vista reports it's there.....

But the actual amount available is....

I doubt its possible to fully utilize all 4GB DDR2/3 memory on any 32 bit OS. If you want to utilize the maximum potential of the rams, whether 4GB, 8GB, 6Gb 12GB, I highly recommend paying a little more to get a 64bit OS, especially Windows 7.
