Download the Red Alert 3 Map Generator

Recommended Posts

Credit to CNC World for this news. What was originally said to be impossible by EA themselves, the clever people in the C&C Community change all that by creating the first Red Alert 3 Map Generator. Created by Kos4u2c.

This map generator can generate 1-6 players land/water maps, and 2/4 players tournament (symmetrical maps). Current settings include textures & texture blending, heights, height smoothing, water height & reflection etc. These settings can be saved as text files and edited. It can also open maps, and generate RA3 styled previews. When saving a map, make sure to browse to the folder containing RA3 maps, the program will automatically create a sub folder and save map & preview inside.

This would be a great program for those who find using the Red Alert 3 Worldbuilder somewhat difficult to use.

Ah, what do they know?

Or maybe to get a few asymmetrical maps to play since we didn't seem to get any with the game...

This looks like it has a lot of potential. :)

Yeap, like Greg Black said in BCPT, the community always win, and there we go. :D Good old times since back in Tiberian Sun, I think.

I think the issue was raised at the RA3 Community Summit last June. Someone asked about including some sort of random map generator in the game, the two guys who work on the Worldbuilder program said that wouldn't be possible due to the complexities of the SAGE/RNA engine. I guess what it really means is someone had to sit down and figure it out.

i have to agree on that, it seems they didnt had the time to do so, i love this software and i like that the creator kept the Visual Studio design as UI :)

seems indeed it needs a little more work (like he said clifs etc) but its very very good utility!

bravo.

Hah, things like this are always possible when they have the source code, lazy EA? :P

This is interesting, bet it took him a while to reverse that map format...

Ah but when did he actually start working on this little project of his? And even if he's been working on it since the day RA3 came out** that is an amazing feat of brain power. He figured out the map format and made a random map generator for a game which was said to be impossible for in just over 3 months. Imagine what this guy could do if he had access to the source. Like say, a paid job at EALA.

**Which was just over 100 days ago (102), October 28 (that's 3 months and 10 days).

I guess EA just did not want to release a map creator that has some faults left in it. I'm sure they could have done it if a separate team had the time for such a feat.

In my opinion, they just should release the campaign maps for skirmish, look much more detailed than the ones we have.

Congrats to Kos4u2c anyways.

Before C&C3, maps were simply compiled. Once they've setup this crazy XML thing that killed modding, there are still compiled maps, but you can also open maps on XML (text) format. That has opened the 'map file format' to the users, who can create text files with their own applications. With a bit of patience and skill, you are able to create decent random maps for any game, even 3D ones. EALA sets low to none priority for thiis kind of thing, which is really a pitty, since it makes the game replayable for a much longer time. I'm glad that there are fans like Kos4u2c who dedicate their time to work on this kind of thing.

I've not posted a news on PPM about it because I'm a lazy bastard and I'm still having problems to manage my time. But this is definitely news worthy.
