If George Orwell's 1984 were real, in which country would you live? Each government is a totalitarian dictatorship that typically run their countries the same way, and are in a permanent state of war.

Oceania

Successor to the United States after it conquered the British Empire and Latin America. It's political philosophy is known as Ingsoc.

Eurasia

Successor state to the Soviet Union after it conquered Europe. It's political philosophy is known as New Bolshevism.

Eastasia

Separatist group that broke away from Eurasia. It's political philosophy is known as Death Worship.

Disputed Territories

Third-world territories that are constantly being conquered and re-conquered by the three powerful countries. The population of these territories are slaves.

Looking at the issue based purely on the graphic... it makes no sense that UK remains Oceania.

The world seems very imbalanced toward Oceania.

Highest land area ownership, most fertile land area, most advanced former-nations (as of 1984), largest latitude diversity, all of the New World land mass.

Therefore, I would rule uh... live in Oceania.

I have never read this book, so I think I will.

I'd need more history on the book and such.

But I'd like where I already live, in the almighty Oceania. ^_^

Now I have read the book and I don't understand the point of this poll, Eurasia and Eastasia are only mentioned as enemies of Oceania in the book. Almost nothing other than their geographical locations are ever spoken on as the story only follows one man living in Oceania.

Looking at the issue based purely on the graphic... it makes no sense that UK remains Oceania.

This is actually explained:

Moreover, no fighting ever occurs except in the disputed areas round the Equator and the Pole: no invasion of enemy territory is ever undertaken. This explains the fact that in some places the frontiers between the superstates are arbitrary. Eurasia, for example, could easily conquer the British Isles, which are geographically part of Europe, or on the other hand it would be possible for Oceania to push its frontiers to the Rhine or even to the Vistula. But this would violate the principle, followed on all sides though never formulated, of cultural integrity.

I do not understand the back story. Mind elaborating?

Wikipedia is your friend.

A quote I find interesting, keeping in mind that this book was published in 1949:

All three powers merely continue to produce atomic bombs and store them up against the decisive opportunity which they all believe will come sooner or later. And meanwhile the art of war has remained almost stationary for thirty or forty years. Helicopters are more used than they were formerly, bombing planes have been largely superseded by self-propelled projectiles, and the fragile movable battleship has given way to the almost unsinkable Floating Fortress; but otherwise there has been little development. The tank, the submarine, the torpedo, the machine gun, even the rifle and the hand grenade are still in use.

But how do you even know these Empires even excist! There are suggestion that the Rocket Bombs were dropped on the citys just to stir up fear and hate. It is very possible that these empires are just an invention of IngSoc to "keep the peace" Or that is my interpitation of the book at least. The constant alliance changes are the only real indication that they might excist...

The south pole.

It isn't on the map, but Antarctica is mentioned in the book. It's another disputed area.

If 1984 was real, I would live in Oceania.

Besides, that's reminds me of a future C&C Red Alert 4. Maybe the game should take place in the 1980s where the plot, ideas and events shall be similar from this book.

That may state the status quo but it doesn't explain it to me....

Well to understand it in full, you'd have to read the whole section, but it's a bit lengthy...

Go to Part 2, Chapter 9 scroll down to where it says:

. Chapter III

War is Peace

Then read the following 4004 words and it will make sense.

Basically, conquering each other isn't point of the war, wasting resources in a never-ending war is.

Nothing seems more pointless than just that.

A second read doesn't make it seem any less pointless to my opinion.

The book isn't really about a smart government though... so obviously you would be inclined to disagree with it.

And that book within a book was supposedly written by a rebel, so it is from the anti-government perspective.

Then there is the whole "doublethink" thing, in which the people at the top are in denial as to what their true goal is even though they know full well what it is.

The ultimate point is to keep the people under control and the government in power forever.

(I haven't read your suggested text... but "A+" for effort!)

I think I understand the status quo and the point of the war... before you provided your link.

My issue is not with "what is" but "what was".

It still makes no sense, when looking at the map visually, that the British isles are linked to Oceania.
