Renegade X: Black Dawn Released

Recommended Posts

First you're joyful about RenX, then you say it isn't worthy just because it's big? UT3 disc takes 6.5 GB, and the smallest pirated rip is still bigger than RenX, which is technologically superior to UT3!

You meant to say that UDK is superior to UT3. Renegade X uses UDK's framework.

Exactly. Since RenX is UDK-based, RenX is technologically superior to UT3 as well.

That's a silly leap of logic. UT3 looks much better than Renegade X does, even with an engine that's not as "superior" comparatively. The engine is irrelevant, I'm more concerned with quality of content. My point isn't to denigrate their work (since it's pretty good for a free FPS) but to defend a very good engine against a nebulous comment. ;-)

I disagree in this case. While I commend the graphics and nostalgia of Renegade, that's all I can say I liked. The gameplay is lacking somewhat, and frankly, it annoys me that my team mates, if they're not retreating by following me and facing their backs to the enemy, always seem to get in the way. If Havok works alone, why do they keep tagging along? Why are they completing the missions for him?

I'm not saying it's bad, it just needs effort on more than just the graphics and humor of the in game videos.

What I wrote on IndieDB:

Played through half of the campaign and suffered through two system lockups which required restarting my system via the power button. Graphics were pretty decent. Comparable to games from 2008-2009, but the overall (lack of) brightness makes it difficult to discern any details in their work.

AI was pretty terrible. Was difficult to see who and what was attacking you and where it was coming from.

On a technical aspect, the foliage looked good. The voice acting was pretty sub-par - didn't sound anywhere close to the level of professionalism that was in the Renegade voice clips. You can easily hear the difference when they're played side to side. It wasn't terrible, but definitely needed some work. Nowhere near as clear and crisp as the original audio from Renegade.

Here's hoping the MP release will be better. Good try, but needs a lot of improvement - specifically in the stability area. Would love to continue playing past the sixth mission if I wasn't worried about system lockups being a continual problem.

I agree with you on many levels, man. It's a very good looking release, but not a very stable one.

They manually set the available resolutions. You can go to your Renegade X Black Dawn folder and then: UDKGame\Config\UDKmenu.ini and add a line Resolutions=1366x768 to the others. Or you can go to UDKGame\Config\UDKEngine.ini and search for ResX= and ResY= and set the resolution directly (in the SystemSettings category).

Oh and never go alt tab or you get something like this:

am i the only one that doesnt critisize this release as a console Player? or a newbie PC gamer?

can this be improved and be even better, YES it can!

was this the terget of the team that started to make Multiplayer Only? no it wasnt! this was a slight demo.

so i jusdge it from a Developer's perspective!

i am sorry if i see it first as a software engineer and not a casual player!

because i know and i fully understand the effort and work that needs to be put in this to be done, i cant just judge it for not been a polished super solid game release, like one from a multybillioner studio or publisher!

this are guys arround my age, more or less with passion for Creation and then for Gameplay,

puting money from their pockets and thousends of working hours and talent!

its not fair to call it was "terrible"

i challenge each and everyone of you so hard "judges" to make a better one! if you can Make one!!!

those who can't create, easily criticize!

weldone to you all critics!

To be fair, ACK does have some experience in creative work... he is rather opinionated... but that is his er... charm.

I had a quick play, and I was really suprised how unlike BF3 it was. I've only played a few hours of BF3, but I found the controls and the combat sluggish in comparison, and I was really suprised by how quickly I got converted to a different playstyle.

But Ren-X is still the most impressive fan work I have played... ever.

Can't wait for MP.

Played through a bit of it, performance wise its fine, running it all high settings. I refuse to comment on the gameplay though. Mostly because I've told myself I will no longer be sharing any such comments about any C&C game (official/unofficial). Its how I used to be, fell out of that character, best I return to that I think.

because a person runs a website doesnt mean he cant comment on games!

he is still a player! and maybe a developer him self too!

he just cant take the "company" side all the time and try to put in nice words what simple isnt nice even to him just because he runs a site promoting a certain game fransize.

its freedom that must run the websites and cnc community, as long as nobody forces his/her opinion into other's brain just because he runs a site or something!

every person has his own experiences in different stuff and his unique personality!

what i dont like its to be Absolute! like calling this release total crap! thats absolute even if is a human opinion and i respectfully agree to disagree with that!

doesnt that mean that AFC or me or Sonic or Z do not have the right to express them self and what they think,

but try put a little bit of balance and tolerance when it comes to free fun projects, thats all that i am saying!

if its an official game-crap release, even thought you dont like it doesnt mean you shouldn't say about it!

why not? because you may loose "special" treatment from the company in the future?

if the company is Professional and have character they will try to change your mind, not isolate you!

as a website administrator you should all respect more your USERS and not the companies! if you do that then you have nothing to be afraid off!

thats my 2cents.

There's more to it Johnny, I won't be explaining why. But you will all be seeing less comments from me on everything around here anyway.

I think Johnnyxp64 is right. You too are more than welcome to express your opinion, especially when you have 14 years of community experience. Same as you did with C&C 4, you covered everything about it before and after its release and I still think you don't like it. What's wrong with that?

But you will all be seeing less comments from me on everything around here anyway.

Oh ****, not this again...

The UDK installer error'd up on me somewhere around it being half way installed/unpacked. It said everything failed except a few files. I don't get it... this was my 3rd try. Downloaded it via torrent.

The torrent's ok where I live

Just can't get it to run because UDK doesn't support ATi Radeon X1xxx series :(

@Johnnyxp64

Calm down. We are entitled to our own opinions, and you shouldn't throw us under the bridge just because you dislike what we had to say. Speak from an engineering standpoint all you want, but ACK HAS designed his own work in the 3D realm of first person shooting. And please, don't critisize anyone on not knowing hard work. I may not be a designer or engineer, but I, and many other people on these forums, know their share of work on the artistic realm.

Here's what you need to understand. We don't think the game is complete crap. But the only way the game will improve, and I mean the ONLY way, is if someone stands up and explains what they think is wrong with it. I'm sorry you don't agree with our comments, but please, don't chew us out for it. Respect our opinions.

but try put a little bit of balance and tolerance when it comes to free fun projects, thats all that i am saying!

We did. That's why we commented about the good things as well. There were still many aspects about this game that I enjoyed.

as a website administrator you should all respect more your USERS and not the companies! if you do that then you have nothing to be afraid off!

If someone chooses, by his own means, not to comment due to personal reasons, he should be entitled to. Who are you to berate him for refusing to speak on his own behalf? You're even encouraging him to say negative things if he so chooses, right after telling us to not speak so negatively.

All in all, I'm going to try to play further into the game today. I keep getting stuck at different parts. Don't be so quick to judge me, as I still have a bit to learn. I'm simply speaking on an honest level, because censorship, even of my own voice, is a lot worse than just praising the game for all the good that it has, just because I'm not a producer. I'm a gamer. I'm a player, in this case, which means I am entitled to make whatever comments I want about the game I am playing.

This is somewhat difficult for me. On the one hand, as both modder and gamer I'm seriously impressed by their raw work, the sheer amount of time spent on it and the level of detail they put into so much stuff. Yet on the other hand, I feel kinda... disappointed by the end result. The only way I can describe it is halfhearted, which feels somehow at the same time accurate but also unfair. So please, RenX team, don't get this criticism wrong.

Many things simply lack the polish or care needed. For example the intro movie - I've missed it twice simply because it positioned was at the most unfitting point in the starting order (in sequence with the logo-movies which I always skip when possible). The menus are frankly useless, the ingame menu is missproportioned, the graphics settings are superficial and the sound settings did not react at all (had to edit the INIs directly to get it working properly). The UI vanished entirely when I respawned at a checkpoint. These aren't minor slips, such issues simply need not be present in a properly developed game with even minimum testing.

I have to admit that I'm seriously confused by the gameplay. It ranges anywhere between tactical shooter, team shooter and arcade shooter and rapidly switches between these - I'm never sure if I'm doing the "right" thing or just getting by on ways the devs didn't expect. Overall the missions seem to lack proper pacing, you are given some weapons (good luck picking the correct ones) and as you go on, enemies pop up and swarm you, that's it. There are some occurrences which I can only classify as spiteful, like the Humvee blowing up in part3 - if you don't know it and are too close, you're practically dead.

What baffles me is how unfitting the graphics are. Not bad, mind you, but unfitting for a game. It's very difficult to make out what is actually going on due to everything being mostly black-in-black and many low-contrast objects blurring together. Yet high-impact effects such as explosions are absolute visual focuses but largely irrelevant.

Hey guys, thanks for giving Black Dawn a try. In this post I'll be addressing a few positive and negative reactions from the team's perpsective.

To the positive feedback, we appreciate your support and you follow our updates for more news on multiplayer soon.

As for mirrors, we launched Black Dawn with 8 mirrors and 2 torrents. We didn't think this wouldn't be enough, since we expected many more mirrors to pop up. The amount of traffic and attention forced us to take down some of the official mirrors. You can check all available mirrors here - renxgame.com/ - we've gotten more than 50,000 hits in the past couple days, so be patient as we are trying our best to make the file more available. If you're getting any technical difficulties, please visit our forums and we'll try to help you from there.

There were a few consistent negative comments that I'll talk about. First I'd like to make clear that the purpose of Black Dawn was to put out a preview of the game before the multiplayer. This is the first time Renegade X goes standalone, and thus it's the first time we make rounds on the internet outside of the C&C and UT communities, and the only real way a free game can advertise itself on big sites is through a demo release.

Renegade X is free, but that does not make it immune to constructive criticism. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the experience, and this demo release was important to that process. Though keep in mind that we do have reasonable limits. Black Dawn has its bugs, but I don't think you can find another indie high quality C&C FPS singleplayer game like us. I would however like to focus on critiques that effect Renegade X in the long term, because that is what we are after, as a multiplayer game, just as we should not judge Battlefield 3 for its singleplayer.

The main downfall of Black Dawn us was the AI. Epic released a standard AI with the UDK when it was originally released, and this is what we're using at the moment. The AI has some minimal functions and is able to follow simple directives, but we had our fingers crossed that Epic would improve AI with one of their monthly UDK releases. Our AI does not take cover, does not work as a team, and overall functions simplisticly, and to have intelligent enemies would require a few full-time AI programmers doing a year of work, and unfortunately we don't have those resources. Part of the reason why we didn't focus on AI is because on the long-term, the only AI we'll be seeing in multiplayer is the harvester, which has a simple function that the current AI should be able to handle with a few tweaks. Otherwise, most of our work on the bots was done in kismet, to at least make the campaign more enjoyable.

Something else we've heard about was the voice acting. Most of what we used came straight out of Renegade. We agree that the flow at some parts is awkward, but we thought it would still be good to re-introduce the characters before throwing them into multiplayer. Getting a new person to play Havoc for example would probably get some flak as well, so we think reusing clips from Renegade's always.dat was a better idea. Though, the fact that we were able to make a 1-2 non-remake custom campaign and still find plenty of dialogue for the game and 15 minutes of cinematics is impressive to us and took a lot of work and rummaging, even if it was lacking in some places. We probably did 30% of the voice acting ourselves, and as most of you are probably aware, we are developers and not actors. Either way, this again is not something that effects the project on a long-term, because voice acting and character development is not a big theme in multiplayer as well. This also applies to cinematics.

What we'd like to hear more of are comments about the long-term features as a whole - the HUD, the way weapons handle, the animations, the art and lighting, the vehicles, recoil, cameras, the effects, etc. And on all these fronts, we believe we're already on a much better ground than we were for multiplayer. These are all things that will effect us on the long term, and while not perfect and in need of tweaking, all of these things compared side-by-side to the UT3 version is a huge improvement.

For those who haven't finished BD, we advice you to at least play levels 7, 8, and 9 as we feel that these were the most well done :)

I hope you all enjoy the campaign and keep your eyes and hearts open to the multiplayer.

Sincerely,

Fobby
