Top 5 RTS Games Ever!

Recommended Posts

The title says it all, what are your top 5 best RTS games you've ever played/owned? Count them down from your personal best 1st then upwards. Also Give a reason why they're at that spot or why you like it so much.. OK mine are

1) Imperium Galactica 2 There's just something I personally could never fault with this game. An RTS based on taking over the entire galaxy, when faced with 7 other Alien Races. Music was beautiful, nice blend of base building. Space battles, ground battles, espionage, you name it, they have it... C&C meets Homeworld in every respect, mirrored by the fact that this game scored 94% in PC Gamer UK.

2) C&C: Tiberian Dawn The one that started off the RTS revolution, and the child of Dune 2, need I say this is a classic. The reason this wasn't number 1, is that really, it took me a while to get into C&C, where as for IG2, I just fell in love instantly with IG2, cos it was the first in depth RTS I played with so much to do. That's really the only thing that splits it.

3) Rise Of Nations Had this game never of come out it would of been Age Of Empires 2. But this game is AOE2 and much much more. Similar to Imperium Galactica, gaining territory is the key, as well as reasearch and turning a small farming villiage into a large city can be very rewarding. Couple that with the fact that you can play with any epoch in time, plus future timelines, makes this a great all rounded RTS which cannot be faulted.

4) Total Annihilation In many people's eyes this was a C&C killer, which grabbed Red Alert by the thraot and murdered it in cold blood. While Red Alert was resoundingly excellent, Total Annihilation was just that much better. Fierce battles, huge explosions, improved resouce management, incredibly better unit physics, it's all there, the only thing that TA failed on was the way presentation of mission briefings, and in a very narrow margin, the gameplay. But battles in this game were hard and long and gave you a realisation that those 50 tanks you decided to rush with in an attack, are actually easily stoppable unless you employ the correct strategy.

5) Perimeter I don't know if its because I'm playing this at the moment or it's another RTS I've fallen in love with, perimeter holds its own very well. Enough depth to keep me interested, the AI likes to bite and you really do need strategy in this game, otherwise a hard worked army can be destroyed in no time, and the battle you thought you were easily winning, is suddenly lost. I love games that need strategy in the face of high stakes. This game keeps you on your toes, and that's why it's my number 5.

From the first time I saw StarCraft, I can't let my hand off from the mouse, and I play it everyday 5 years ago. Now I'm not often play it, but still it's the best RTS ever.

1. C&C: Tiberian Dawn. Because the first Nod mission is sooo cool. And the entire game is.

2. C&C: Red Alert 1. I've played this more than C&C1; it has better storyline and style overall, but compard to an Obelisk of Light the Tesla Coil isn't that good. But it was more modable than C&C1 :)

3. Rise of Nations. It's a nice RTS, very fast pace. And I can't win on high difficulty because it's so fast-paced and chaotic.

4. Perimeter. I've only played the demo so far, but it is a very promising game. It reminds me of Netstorm, which was very interesting but too hard (you couldn't know how to win like the 6th mission in there). If I like the full game, then maybe this will move up to #3.

5. C&C: Red Alert 2. It was fun to play, though the FMVs where cheesy.

It's not even out for at least another 2 months yet.. So I'd love to know why somebody can base their impressions on a game that's only shown movies and pictures to the gameplaying public

4 ailen vs predator

AVP is an FPS not an RTS.

It'd be an interesting concept if it was, but then you might as well call it starcraft 2 seeing as it would be exactly that....

I wonder if there will be an RTS mod team out there that could do more than just change a few units about, a few buildings, and attempt to Totally convert the whole game. They should also take a risk in a sense by attempting to come up with new ideas for this RTS.

It's more of a professional developer job to do that, but I'm wondering with what the SAGE engine offers, whether or not it would be possible to change almost any aspect of a game, and convert it to their own work...

Of course the only thing blocking that is the rights to the source code, which is where the problem lies. But it would be a challenge in my mind for a team to extend beyond what they have and find a way around the problem without having to to break rules or laws... but to bend them to the extreme limits.

That's where I think the Crimson Dawn Team could have something up their sleeves.. but I doubt they'll play their cards close to their chest and produce anything we haven't seen already.... It's not a direct critical comment, but in my eyes it's one which serves the rules and laws of todays games. If anyone can find their way round it without using the source code, will be very popular indeed.

There are a lot of good rts games out there, but C&C has the best combined gameplay, storyline, graphics, and cut scenes. Oh, plus it kicks ass.

Naa Starcraft is better. maybe not with regard to cut scenes but everything else it does. ;)

Yup, take a look at the StarCraft community, there are lots of them. And the Korean are the most fanatic SC players. The first release of SC is in 1998 and then Broodwar released a year later, but SC is still the best RTS game. I wonder if SC2 will be even better than SC.

Well it sorta was. And all C&C games have good quality except for the story of RA2/YR and Generals.

When was SC 2 announced?

Sole Survivor was horrible.... Utterly horrible. Worst C&C game. Worst game of all time... Utterly horrible...
