Sonic 292 Posted April 16, 2013 (edited) This thread takes over from the old What's in your Rig? that has been pinned at the top of the Hardware Discussion & Tech Support forum since about Feburary 2007. I thought it was time for new one, because in the past 5-6 years everyone must have either a new system or made some key upgrades.I'll kick things of. My current system specs... Sonic 292 Posted February 18, 2015 Also bought some BitFenix Alchemy extension cables for proper cable management. I remember buying some stuff to do some cable management, I think that was way back 2010, never did get around it. Its tidy enough I think. As in the side panel goes back on and the case slides back under the desk. All I did was add a third hard drive and double the RAM. I consider those key upgrade. Adding more RAM is always good. Still rocking it with Windows XP though? -edit- aww, quote snapbacks don't work anymore. -edit2- oh wait, yes they do, the icon just changed and is hiding over on the right side Nothing has changed with the post snapbacks for a very long time, unless your trying to use one from the old IP.Board 2.x days or even further back when these forums where phpBB based. Mighty BOB! 4 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) Oh derp I didn't fully read my own quote. I'm on Win7 Ultimate now. I figured 'well it's only $20 more than Pro, might as well go Ultimate.' Still got XP installed on one of the 3 drives though. I also picked up an MSI GT70. Processor: Intel Core i7-4800MQ @ 2.7GHz Memory: 12GB DDR3 Video Card: nVidia GeForce GTX 870M 3GB Operating System: Windows 8.1 Hard Drive(s): 128GB SSD (so not big enough D: ) for the OS and stuff, 1TB disk drive for bulk storage Weight: ~8.6 lbs Screen: 1080p, nice brightness and viewing angles She boots up in a heartbeat but god 128GB is so small; I only have a couple games and production tools installed and it's nearly full. I'll probably replace the SSD with a larger one when Win10 upgrades become available. Edited February 20, 2015 by Mighty BOB! Share this post Link to post

I'll probably replace the SSD with a larger one when Win10 upgrades become available. SSD's are great aren't they. So glad I switched to one. Everything is so snappy and quick and yes Windows 8.1 boots is like 3 or 4 seconds for me. And what impresses me even more, there is no lagging and loading once the desktop pops up. Its just on and ready to go. I totally agree about the 128GB size. Feels a tad small so that why I went with a 256GB, just to give me that extra bit of breathing room Share this post Link to post

zunnie 3 Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) I've used it for a bit but went back to Windows 7 due to incompatibilites for some programs i used a lot such as 3DSMax8 and the Renegade Level Editor. One thing i also don't like in Windows 10 is the fact you cannot stream multiple media files to your television using Windows Media Player and have it on shuffle. You can only play one media file at a time which is really dumb. And the startmenu is stupid. (i used classicshell though) The above resulted in me reverting back to Windows 7. edit: the pink headphones are really good btw lol, it was a present for my nieces who come here a lot and use my pc lol Edited December 8, 2015 by zunnie Share this post Link to post

You can only play one media file at a time which is really dumb. Since I don't do any of that its obviously not a problem for me but I understand what your talking about. And the startmenu is stupid. (i used classicshell though) Wow really. I think new start menu is one of the best features. Its speedy, customisable and its better that the silly start screen that Windows 8/8.1 had. Plok 319 Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) It's impossible to delete or move objects in the All Apps (insert cringe on the apps term) view (which is terrible if an uninstaller leaves them behind), things in subfolders are seen from a main folder (often creating a cluster) and all icons are too huge. The accessibility of Metro Apps in the start menu and visible Settings/CP buttons is much welcome and neat, but the rest of it is still 8-styled, only takes up less of the screen. When you have more prograns, it's rather difficult to use :/ Classic Shell lets you switch to a Win7 style or either of the WinXP styles, which allows for better visibility and management options, albeit at the price of abandoning Metro App previews like News and Weather. PurpleGaga27 37 Posted December 8, 2015 And the startmenu is stupid. (i used classicshell though) edit: the pink headphones are really good btw lol, it was a present for my nieces who come here a lot and use my pc lol I seldom heard of a guy using pink headphones. As for the Win10 start menu, it was not good for the desktop but rather well fit for tablet/smartphone versions. I wish I had a fourth rig, but now I use a fourth PC as a tablet: RCA brand Cambio W101 v2 Intel Atom Z3735 processor quad-core @ 1.8 ghz 2 GB RAM, 32 GB SSD, Intel integrated graphics, detachable keyboard with touchpad, USB 3.0, mini-HDMI out, Windows 10 Bought it on Black Friday for $128 USD which a fraction of the price from any MS Surface or even an iPad pro. I even put Droid4X Android emulator in there to make it even more useful. 1 Share this post Link to post
Sonic 292 Posted December 9, 2015 The stupid trend of people calling computers "rigs" continues. Who started and when? Look up the word "rig" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rig and you will see it has nothing to with a computer system. Thats my rant for today Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 289 Posted December 9, 2015 Well that's Wikipedia, an encyclopedia. You have to look it up in a dictionary, like Wiktionary where you will see it is a slang term for "A computer case, often modified for looks" (which sounds like people are still using it wrong). However, as far as slang goes, at least when people are talking about computers and say rig, you know they aren't talking about their new sail and cordage rope. Whereas if someone says their new computer was downright stupid before it literally caught on fire, you no longer have any idea if the computer was good or bad, or if there was any actual combustion involved. That's my somewhat subtle rant for today (permission to ban anyone who misuses the word literally? no? ok... ). Share this post Link to post
PurpleGaga27 37 Posted December 9, 2015 Well "rig" may be a slang term, obviously meant for phrases like drilling rig, gaming rig, etc. As for that question Sonic, I really wished I know the answer who started that rant. Share this post Link to post
