The RTS Games Resources Debate

Recommended Posts

The resources are the most important part of any RTS game, and Command & Conquer games are no different with Tiberium in the Tiberium universe, Ore and Gems in the Red Alert universe. Here's a funny video that opens the debate, which classic RTS game has the best resource. The video features Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Dune 2000, StarCraft, Warcraft 2 and more....

So what is the best resource ever in RTS games?

"All the C&C Classic RTS games are free to play." They used those unspeakable words to describe free games, those words that everyone knows mean not-really-free. People need to be careful with their choice of terminology when talking about free games if they don't want to be misunderstood.

Back to the topic at hand...

Never played StarCraft, so can't fairly judge it...

Ore and gems laying on the ground never made sense, sorry Red Alert, but it's true.

Raw materials like trees/stone/etc. are fine, but also somewhat obvious and, thus, overused. Also, the raw materials available often aren't sufficient (logically) to build the not-entirely-wood/stone/whatever structures.

Spice and tiberium are good because they are explained through lore why they are there. However, tiberium wins over spice because it actually contains the minerals used to build everything whereas the spice melange is just a drug.

They are free for you to download and play, actually. We're just used to seeing the modern publishers' misuse of the term :P

Never played StarCraft

Why not? :D

Units/structures can be trained/built with the money gained from selling the Spice, theoretically.

Why would it spawn ore/gems randomly within a circle around it? What's the logic behind an unmanned drill seen in RA1/2 anyway? :P

That doesn't change what I said at all.

Ever noticed the drill in the middle of the field that brings up the ore? :P

I have, that's not how mining works.

Not only is it not how mining works, but in RA1 it just shows a mineshaft hole thingy, not a drill at all :P

Amusement!!!

Like Nmenth I like the lore behind Tiberium and Spice over the other choices.

I like Tiberium the most because of the additional game-play element of being dangerous to infantry. Although worms do add a nice element of danger.

I'm still stunned that Nmenth hasn't played Starcraft...
