RA2 Install error

Recommended Posts

Guest Moondogg

i just got a new computer, Athlon 3400+, 1 GB RAM, etc, with windows xp professional. RA2 worked just fine on my old computer, but on this one the autoplay screen comes up, i hit install, and setup.exe keeps flipping out and giving me an error message, the generic "Setup.exe has encountered an error and needs to close." and that jazz. believe me, ive ran circles around the compatibility, tried 95, 98, you name it. i mean, the thing doesnt even install. is there any way to cure this or do you think theres a scratch on the cd that i cant see...any ideas would be great.

man, that really sucks... do you have any other details? It could be a scratch or something like that, but it sounds like something with your setup. Have you encountered any other similar problems with other games?

BTW, your new computer sounds awesome

I checked for scratches, i didnt see any glaring wounds in the cd, and i gave it a run over with my cd polish and scratch remover. still no dice. i havent had any sort of problem with any other game, ive also tried both allied and soviet discs. i can download a copy now cant i? since i do have a legal copy of the cd and valid cd key, but im not sure whether its a cd problem or a machine problem...

yeah it basically has massive amounts of sucktitude.

info you supplied are not enough, tell us more so we can help you..your error is very general.

a good idea is to tell us the exact error msg you see with all details.

to confirm the safty of your CDs you may need to test them on a friend's PC or some.

however i feel that the prob is in your machine.

also mention all your PC details.

be aware that some progs can disable a correct install.

the error ITSELF is general. i have an athlon 3800+, 1 GB RAM, radeon x800 XT vidcard, with service pack 2 installed. i have a feeling that theres a problem with SP2 or radeon cards, because my old computer had xp service pack 1, and an nvidia card.

Nothing to do with your machine... Just its software

If you have the XP disk you could try installing it over then installing gens...

I have this problem mentioned by the author as well. Every time you try to run setup.exe, it just crashes each and every time. Regardless of compatibility mode or the like. This is even trying to install from off the hard drive as well.

An interesting thing I have noticed is that the RA2 Expansion installer works fine. I'm beginning to wonder if the install program for the original RA2 somehow does not properly compensate for something newer in the system and crashes as a result.

I have had this happen in some other games, too. But it's not something you come across too often. As a result, I can't play this game at all. Nobody seems to know how to go around it. As such, nobody has bothered to create some kind of workaround.

...something tells me it'll be forever until a solution is found. I have no hardware or the like to fall back on. And I'm not even sure if there is some possible way to fool the install program into thinking I have older hardware. Such as say like an older CPU. That's the only thing I can think of, but don't know where I could look for such a thing; if such a thing exists. <sighs>

I am thinking that as well. It's the only piece of hardware that would seem far fetched from anything of the time Red Alert 2 was first released. But again...if that's the case...I can't do anything! I've even went as far as using the Application Compatbility toolkit to find some tweaks that would work, but this damn thing will not get off the ground, I am getting irritated.

There has to be another way going about installing this. Maybe a manual way.

Well, I post too, and I think you can help me out :D

and in a way I'm helping you out a bit too.

I have exactly the same problem BUT my system specs are:

- Pentium II 400 MHz

- 288 MB RAM (yeah it's weird)

- 19 GB harddisk

- Windows 98 SE (!)

- 8 MB S3 Trio 3D card

Please help me out. And, the problem cannot be the 64 bit processor, because my processor is a 32 bit. Please help me, YR is one of my fav games, and I haven't been able to play it since I have formatted my HD 2 years ago :(

[EDIT]

And my CD is fine, it works on other systems, so it must be my computer.

64 bit processors are a bit of an unknown at the moment, I'm sure they do cause problems when playing C&C as people with 64 bit processors seem to have the problems.

OK, there are peoiple with nornmal processors who have the problem as well, but there have always been them.

I think it has something to do with the xp sp2. my old computer could run it and it was using sp1. But when i got my new computer i pathed to sp2 and tried to install RA2 and got that error. so i patched my old computer to SP2 and tried to reinstall and got the same error. Its not the disks because they work in my friends computer and his give the same error in mine. EA tech support wont help either as i was on to them for days and eventually they were telling me to do things they had already told me to try like compatability modes

I run WinXP SP2, I installed RA2 and YR a few weeks ago without any problems. The only thing I had to change was the compatiblity setting to Win98/WinME to make the game load.

I have the same problem. Ive searched countless fourms for a solution, contacted tech support, but no one seems to know the answer.

After searching on google, I found a temporary fix: restart your computer in safe mode, restart in normal, then install, I havent tried it yet, but many people say the game works until the next time you restart.

EDIT: I tried it, didnt work. Anyway, heres the original source: http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t...age=1&pp=15

HOOAH! I got it to work. Just follow this link, and install the safedisk update.

Ok, folow the steps exactly!!! Take all files on Allied disk put onto your desktop, change the run mode to 98/me, then burn them to a cd, but before you can use you have to download a program called DAEMON Tools 3.47 and instal (spyware and virus free) at http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/dow...ory&catid=5

then install then open and while it is in your tray right click and highlight emilation and highlight all options the tray icon should turn green then star up your cd voilla, it works!

i also came up with that solution by my self!
