You can remove the shortcut symbols. It's some setting in the registry. Google it

Also, all of the "files" you see are shortcuts to actual files. There are some actual folders on the desktop, but those just have more shortcuts in them. And none of them have the normal folder icon; all folder icons you see are links to folders somewhere on my disk.

 

Decided to switch to a less... pink one. This one is about 20% cooler, too.

Um no... it means my desktop only has links on it, and folders with more links. No actual files, or folders containing files. Nothing is actually stored in the Windows Desktop folder.

If you have folders with shortcuts to other folders found elsewhere on the HDD, then it's exactly the same as if you have those folders stored in a desktop folder. Get it?

No. That's not how it works. All Nyerguds has on his desktop are shortcuts to other locations. His \desktop\ folder will only have links to places and no files, which is just like mine. I have no files in my desktop folder on my desktop PC or my laptop... just shortcuts.

I mean that they are equally accessible as if they're actually on the desktop. So why bother making a 4 KB .lnk file when you can already have the thing handy at your desktop?

Because some of us have multiple drives for storage and if the Windows drive goes tits up, our data is still in tact. At least that's why I have it that way.

Eeyup. Sums it up quite perfectly. Heck, look at the links, one even literally says "Media on H". that's "drive H", my 1.5 TB storage disk. No way I'd put all my series and music on my C drive, even less so on my actual desktop *shivers*.

 

Also note the "Shortcut to Program Files". Try moving that folder to your desktop
