RKCoon 0 Posted February 28, 2006 OK kids wierd one for ya. i got a Dell Pentium 4, with WinXP on it, 120 GB between two drives... and running offa pretty lame 128 of ram. i got two slots in it, so the question is -- where is thew best place to find out A) whats the most ram i can cram into this thing and where to get it. im not totally sure WHAT kindaram it is either, but id does only have one indent in where it plugs intto the motherboard, it that helps. (yes i SUCK with comps, my idea of technology is the points condensor in my dodge van. *Beaten horrificly* Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted February 28, 2006 If its a Dell you can check their website and insert your service tag and it'll detail all the specs for your computer, and in that will be what kind of memory you have and how much your motherboard can handle. Though I wouldn't go over 1GB personally. Nothing really needs more than that unless you're wanting Word to load that half millisecond faster.... Share this post Link to post
Acerz492 1 Posted February 28, 2006 With all the good games due to come out, it'll eventually be necessary to have at least 1 gig of RAM or more. RKCoon, if you can take a few pics of your motherboard and post 'em here we'd probably be able to help you out a bit better. Share this post Link to post

A. You ussually can look the maximum RAM memory the motherboard can handle in the motherboard box or the motherboard guide book B. If what you meant with "it" is the RAM, then where else other than the computer store to buy it. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted February 28, 2006 Find out the name and model of motherboard, you can then visit the motherboard manufacturers site and look up the specs for how much ram you can use. As for how much, 1 GB is all you will need. As Luk3us said there is no point in having more. Lets say your motherboard can take a maximum of 2 GB, you buy it, install it only see stuff all performance again. Jumping from 128 MB to 1 GB will be great though. Share this post Link to post
rEdaSbLood 1 Posted February 28, 2006 yea i could use some upgrades...according to my AOL my RAM and i think processor need upgrades...and i found that valid...but i think i need a new graphics card too... 2.0 ghz 512ram...good or no? nvidia GeForce 4 MX420...i think its weak... 120G memory i think i need a new monitor too...i keep getting "frequency out of range" with EAW Share this post Link to post
TheBlackOut 7 Posted February 28, 2006 nvidia GeForce 4 MX420? Well its better than my friend's GeForce 256. To see how old it is... The World's First GPU: "August 31, 1999 marked the introduction of the graphics processing unit (GPU) for the PC industry—the NVIDIA GeForce 256. The technical definition of a GPU is "a single-chip processor with integrated transform, lighting, triangle setup/clipping, and rendering engines that is capable of processing a minimum of 10 million polygons per second." With transform, lighting, setup, and rendering on a single GPU, the GeForce 256 delivers 15M polygons/second and 480M pixels/second of performance. Truly revolutionary, its unique 256-bit rendering engine enabled an order of magnitude increase in visual complexity, and helped to set the stage for the future of realism in graphics." Sonic 296 Posted March 2, 2006 Ahh the days of onboard video that shared your system ram for video ram. Share this post Link to post
Koen 2 Posted March 2, 2006 This Dell PC sounds kind of old... so you probably have RDRAM in there... which is really expensive to upgrade. Or it could be DDR-SDRAM, which is obtainable for reasonable prices. On the whole though, a graphics card upgrade would not hurt... but I still have a Geforce 2 GTS (which is actually a lot faster than your Geforce 4 MX). Share this post Link to post

Tut-tut, I can run Generals and ZH. A wee bit slow (just ask TSBO) the EAW demo ran just dandy on here, so EAW wont be a problem. Lets just hope my connection can stick with it. Usually when Im playign a game, even if im online, after a while I completly loose all outside connection. Grrr.... Share this post Link to post

Acerz492 1 Posted March 5, 2006 I know some idiots at my course that claim that Intel is better. I ask why, and they say, "Oh, it's easier to overclock them, and that makes it better!!" On 3D Mark 2001, I have a score of 11596. Standard, nothing overclocked or tweaked. My friend has an overclocked Intel CPU, plus a much better graphics card than mine, and his score only came up to something like 5000! You can't tell me Intel overclocking makes things better. Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted March 5, 2006 Well... I guess you CAN overclock them to AMD stock, if you're lucky  Share this post Link to post
