Thumbs Down for the C&C Saga Bundle

Recommended Posts

This blog sort of follows on from what Banshee has posted over at Project Perfect Mod. Banshee basically questions the need for this pack and raises another question at the same time. What about the TFD 1.03 patch that was promised many months ago that never materialised?

Don't get me wrong, the C&C Saga pack presents great value, but from where I sit it's only great value if you haven't already purchased a copy of C&C 3 yet.

So why is EA releasing this pack, is it a "gift" to the long serving C&C community? Of course it isn't! It's called cashing in on this C&C 12th Anniversary thing that started last month, honestly who the hell celebrates a 12th anniversary anyway. This same thing happened 2 years ago after the C&C 10th Anniversary, a celebration of a decade of C&C that was spearheaded and organised by CNCNZ.com and enjoyed by all. What followed shortly after was the announcement of C&C: The First Decade. So really when you think about its the same rinse and repeat formula.

Its a safe bet that the TFD versions of the C&C games in this new pack will remain unchanged as they were when the TFD pack was first made available back in February 2006. Full support for Windows XP was promised for the likes of C&C and Red Alert. They were meant to work right of the box, but what people found out was that they caused nothing but trouble, constant crashing, crippled LAN/Internet support and more. To EA's credit they did through together 2 patches so sort some of the problems and then promised a third patch to squash the remaining bugs, but as I mentioned early that patch never came out. And EA have said nothing about it for a long time.

So sorry EA its a thumbs down for the C&C Saga pack.

Meh, TFD worked fine for me so I don't really care about the 1.03 patch anyway, as such the team at EA should concentrate on getting the 1.09 and any future patches for C&C3 out instead. :P

As for this C&C Saga pack, I have the TFD and TW already, so lol, I don't care about that either. :P And with both C&C3 and TFD safely sitting on my external hard drive, no risk of the disc getting scratched to hell or getting lost. :)

They should have given xwis a facelift wouldn't have hurt either..

Leaving it all up to the XCC guys is just laziness on EA's part

I had no problems with RA or CnC whatsoever, only Tiberian Sun crashed here or there, which got fixed with the patch.

That the videos didnt work wasnt the games fault.

The purpose of this?

Well, to present great value who didnt buy TW yet, mustering up interest in KW and the classic games too.

Of course, they should patch the games if issues are overwhelming, and add some extra content to make it more than value.

And btw, its not surprising that theres no support for these games. Mostly theyre not theirs, and there still were patches.

Lucasarts classics which were released in summer or so didnt even have any kind of patch or compability, you needed Dosbox to play em.

Personally, only thing i dont like is that they STILL have not add Sole Survivor. But all the more fun because i know for sure that TFD was sold at my local store, where C&C3 was, so its a big thumbs up on that part because it looks like they might sell it here :D

EA is just adding TW to be able to call the saga thing "a new game" so that they can get away with charging a new game price. TFD's market value has depreciated and they need something else to be their cash cow for the time being.

And if people are only missing one or two C&C games then they will pay for this because it's still a good deal, and EA knows this.

So overall it's a good deal and a smart move by EA financially speaking, but probably not so good for their reputation as a company only seeking money and not quality products.

To be honest, there's two specific things I'd do to be fine with this:

1 - I'd make it just a release pack, and not call it a 12th anniversary pack.

2 - I'd wait till the expansion comes out.

If this was the case, it wouldn't be a problem at all, because it's been done plenty of times before.

On a high note, if people don't have one or the other sets of games, this won't be such a bad thing, and secondly, it could be considered a collector's item for the time being.

This is really my only beef with the concept.

As a collectors item, it needs to additional content to make it worthy of an anniversary item.

But the upside is, by re-releasing the TFD pack, we have more impetus and better rights to hammer EA for more patches and more functionality to the earlier games... afterall my 'new game' doesn't work! :)

Bottom line, they should have waited at least for the expansion pack.

They should make those pewter figures again. I liked my little RA2 Tesla guy. :P

I have the GDI guy from TS... still in the box. I never saw a RA2 version... otherwise I would have got that!

Even a bobble-head would make me consider buying the 12th anniversary pack... or a kane ring... available through coupon redemption would still be okay.

I say we boycott the whole thing :D

... Why bother when everyone here has C&C 3 + TFD or all the C&C games anyways... They're preying off new noobs, not old. ;)
