I went to a midnight showing cause I was invited. It was better than I thought it would be. Since I had no expectations, I rather enjoyed it.

I'll probably watch it later, when it comes out on DVD. I am getting tired of watching comic movies and no comic movie other than The Dark Knight has been far superior than any other comic movies.

That is pretty much true, but I wasn't asking you. I can't help the smell, my cave is dank, mildew paradise.

I was about to point out mostly what luk3us had describe. You remind me of some characters of this film.

Anyways I watched the film. Awesome film. Fans of Watchmen should catch this film. However if you are one of those typical brainless viewer who enjoy lots of action or lame jokes, please watch something else. From the way I see the responses, I have a feeling majority of the folks here are categorized as brainless viewers.

There was enough action to keep the idiots at bay too. But don't presume anything about the other members, it just makes you look like a condescending ****bag.

I enjoy both brainless and intelligent movies ;)

I wasn't mocking anyone idiots or brainless. I merely assume the majority fall in the category of viewers who prefer brainless simple films.

yah i'm really not a fan of comic book movies. they 99% almost always mess it up. and usually badly. problem is that most of the people who make the movies either don't study the comics they are working from, or they give in to the hollywood guys.

This is precisely why I avoided the reading the comic book until I watched the film tonight. I knew I was going to enjoy the film, and I did.

It's a thinking man's movie/comic, with okay... um enough sex for the ratings, and a lot of violence, but not really a lot of action.

But all the characters, environment, universe, effects were great.

The owl costume is... just... well dumb.

But I then even Christian Bale's Batman costume is dumb I think too.

The blue man was... spooky. Loved it.

I meant to add, but I was in a hurry and forgot, that I avoiding reading the comic and this thread so it wouldn't spoil my surprise. So I was laughing at the irony of the thread sinking into the morass of personal insults and then sonic giving it the kiss of death...

Watchmen has been described as a comic book hero movie with gravitas by a few critics.

So if you don't like a

quality of substance or depth of personality.
in your movies then probably stay away. Yes it has some action and some sex but not enough to offset the subtle and sobre storyline, beautifully setup with it's soundtrack IMO.

It's set during the cold war, where the everyone is afraid of a nuclear holocaust. Possibly this thread will get into spoiler territory now - so be warned. I want to discuss it's plot!

EDIT: Someone sent me this link... watchmen the saturday morning cartoon show.

So people should I go see this or not?

Here's some tips and questions to ask yourself whether it is worth it for you (and friends probably) to spend some money catching this film.

1) Are you expecting this movie to be a simple, action, and/or comedy film?

2) Do you have background knowledge of the film?

3) Have you read the original Alan Moore's comic book?

1. If you are expecting 1), chances are, you will be hating this film and probably demanding your money back. The plot is dark, serious and requires intellect. If you enjoy the film, after watching it you'll have a lot of philosophical stuff to think about.

2. It's a bonus if you have some knowledge of the film. If you do not have any knowledge it, its still okay, but there will be probably 1% of the film you'll probably be scratching your head and wonder why how what happen. For example, why and how does Rorschach have his animated mask.

3. Its a big bonus. It's ok if you have not read the novel. If you read the novel and enjoyed it, chances are you'll love the film even more and appreciate every single detail of the film. If you read the novel and hate it a lot, I suggest please save your money on something else.

Here's my two cents.

Ok, well I will say the mask was the only thing I had trouble understanding. I didn't understand what his mask was until "he" was in the psyche evaluation room. I was just thinking it was some sort of weird disease... so I thought it was quite cool to see it was an "ink blot".

The explanation of the animation did seem to be missing - but it wasn't important to me why it moved, so I just carried on. I mean how does Superman fly after all???

I don't think reading the comic or his other work will unlock major plot lines. Everything is pretty straightforward IMO. Although there is probably a whole other level of nuances that I would appreciate if I had read the book, but past experience means that the nuances usually go in the bad direction:- ie. that movies miss the nuances of the comic if a very bland Hollywood experience.

It's a sophisticated movie; dialog heavy rather than an action-fest, dealing with Adult themes, and by that I don't mean pornography or violence.... and If you don't like those things... that doesn't make you an idiot or intellectually inferior in anyway.

I did laugh at this line though...

If you read the novel and hate it a lot, I suggest please save your money on something else.

Someone who would see a movie of a book they hated, that is an idiot IMO.

You never know because some people are pretty funny. For example, a friend hates the Harry Potter franchise. He hate it so much but watched all the films, his reason was "I watch it so I can b*tch why HP sux." Another example, we see C&C fans (westwood hardcore fans to be precise) b*tching and slamming EA's new C&C products. They whine and swear all they want, and the irony they bought the new C&C products (generals ZH CC&3 KW RA3 RA3UR) and continue to whine and swear all day long. That's the irony.

My review:

Part 1:

Watched the first 72 minutes of the film. What is going to follow is the opinion of someone who has not yet read the book, specifically for the reason to share a view uninfluenced by the source material.

What I've seen does not suck, yet hasn't impressed me on a whole.

My favourite scene so far was the whole Dr. Manhattan segment- Great music, an intriguingly passive character, and well organized scenes. I also found a liking in Rorschach even though his voice gives me throat cancer by just listening to him :P However, so far there's no feeling of connection to either of the characters- it's too bleak and emotionally detatched for its own good, yet by gazillion times deeper than 300. Silk Spectre II and Ozymandias have been the most unconvincing and shallow characters thus far (A spoiled playboy and a nobody) , and I'm not sure that I accept the Comedians way of thinking- Which brings me to the only reason why I'm going to continue watching the film as soon as I find the time- Since what on earth made this animal of a human being weep like an old, lost man? Which does speak volumes about the plot- There's too much time wasted on presenting brief character bios instead of actual drive. I'm also often confused in which time the film plays, as I see no clear (or clichéd) representation of any. Audiovisually, it has been a mixed bag. There were some aesthetic shots, but on a whole, it lacks a distinct style or direction, and the music only works when it's in melancholy mode (Then excellently though). Last note: OTT violence FTL.

Part 2:

Well, I've seen the second half of it yesterday, and I can't recall being this disillusioned by a film for a long time. Why did it turn from a muddled, yet intriguing alternate dimension character study into a sub-par, bland and unintelligent crime thriller? It was also riddled with clichés and mindnumbingly boring. The only redeeming factor was Rorschach hacking and slashing through inmates. Amidst all this simplicity however, there were numerous plot/character points I did not quite get, yet in retrospect don't give a flying dookie about. Even V was a better movie, some lame acting and the horrendously botched ending aside.

5/10

(Side note: I read V and both LoeG books from Moore and loved them to bits)

Saw the movie... Blue penis... Oh, and the movie wasn't that bad either.

In all seriousness, I liked the movie but I can't say I loved it. The movie seemed like it kind of went over some stuff that they could have left out, I donno. Some parts just felt dragged out.
