APOC Comments on RA3 Uprising Being Digital Only

Recommended Posts

On the Official C&C Forums, community manager, APOC, has posted some comments on why Red Alert 3: Uprising is a digital download only. Basically he says EALA are listening to everyone and they are aware of how people feel about the whole idea of digital distribution. EALA feel Uprising works well as a digital download. APOC explains in more detail below.

I'd just like to say that this poll is appreciated and you guys have certainly been heard, and even well before this poll was established. We know the concept of buying a game in-store is a traditional mechanism for you and purchasing online is still a very new concept.

That said, Uprising is not a traditional expansion pack and it is also standalone, so it fits the mold for a download only game quite well.

I think all of our supporting online retailers have fast bandwidth and good download store experiences. I do understand for those with slow connections it may be difficult, my suggestion, let it download overnight or during the day while you are at work or school or wherever you are.

As of right now, Uprising will be a digital download only but I will make sure your voice has been heard. I hope a digital download only does not deter you from experiencing one of our development teams best projects - Uprising is turning out to be quite the gem.

Well it didn't really matter, since EA sales are down due to the recession and I think this type of marketing strategy will bring some C&C fans down. But let's hope Uprising is not epic fail.

What if Uprising gets owned soon by Generals 2?

If they do make it retail, I trust they will also raise the price. :P hahha

I'm sure if sales are below par, they will release a retail version eventually. For slow bandwidth people, perhaps EA store should add the hardcopy backup option on a generic disc without the box... kinda defeats the purpose I guess.

Perhaps we can make copies available of the download and mail to people? Just pay for the shipping/disc cost...

Worse than Generals? (Singleplayer, that is)

The singleplayer, no probably not. As a whole? Yes. Generals made up for the singleplayer with multiplayer, but more importantly with easy mod support, which leads to lots of kickass mods that are still being played and released to this day. Uprising will have neither so as a whole, it is probably not going to last all that long.

But yes if you want to compare only the campaigns and not the games a whole, you are correct that Uprising will probably be better for sure.

How can you judge about a game you did not even play?

I have played RA3 and I think this won't be any more better...

Actually.... yes. When it comes to actual STORY the RA3 is better then generals, yes, but when it comes to gameplay overall (in my opinion at least) RA3 is severly lacking. In what I don't know... It's actually the ONLY C&C game where I have not beaten the single player. I've beaten EVERY C&C game (even generals and zh) but with RA3 I beat the soviet campaign, then only got half way through the allied campain, I just stopped. So yes, RA3 is definetly the least appealing C&C, even when it comes to single player... IMO of course ;)

I posted this here. http://forums.cncnz.com/index.php?s=&s...st&p=157893.

I was flabbergasted when APOC mentioned about letting the download going "overnight or during the day while you are at work or school or wherever you are" for the slow internet connection. Obviously he wasn't aware that such sites may just disconnect or time out or something.

Anyways...

Here's my take on this issue.

1) I rather pay more for a physical retail box than a cheaper online download.

2) If I have to download, I rather download a free version than a version which requires my credit card.

3) Besides, the paid version will not make a difference with a free version, as it is simply a single player game.

P.S. EA loses another customer until a retail version is out.

I wish I could talk what will happen such as the negative results after its release, but I rather keep this to myself.

Anyway, with still being only digital, I fear there's always been a problem for people to get their games. Especially they still got to consider speed & time, on-going download without breaking the chain, paying for bandwidth, etc.. So I'm not sure will this new method works. Me, I need to worry about the speed & time as well as the download without breaking it. Broken downloads mean it's a failed download and have to restart from scratch, which is really really ugly.

Me, I still rather go for a retail version, despite being more expensive a little bit, but a box makes it more "collectible", sometimes when I hold the box, I just stare at it. If it's only an image in my computer, it won't make me stare to it.

Generals is abit like Renegade.

Not a bright single player, but a wonderfull multiplayer and its easy to mod.
