C&C 4 Developer Q&A #18

Recommended Posts

Another round of Command & Conquer 4 questions and answers from the developers was recently posted on the Official C&C Forums. At some stage we missed posting about Developer Q&A #16 and Developer Q&A #17 on CNCNZ.com, so lets jump ahead to the latest round of questions, which covers a range topics like super weapons, commando units, number of skirmish maps and more. Check them out below.

How long does it take for each Super Weapon to charge?

Each superweapon takes a total of 4 minutes to charge to maximum power. However, after only 40 seconds, you can fire off a weaker version of the superweapon. The GDI Ion Cannon has a total of 6 charge levels, with it taking 40 seconds for each level. So, the longer you wait to fire your superweapon, the stronger it gets, until it reaches maximum strength after 4 minutes.

Is there a limit to how many Commandos can be on the field at once per player?

Each player has a limit of a single commando, just as in previous games.

Can a defense player select multiple structures at once to target a single enemy unit?

Yes, C&C 4 now allows you to band box select multiple defensive turrets to give orders to all of them at once. You can also select multiple structures through shift click, and any of the other multi-selection mechanisms in C&C 4. However, defensive turrets are not included on the various unit selection hotkeys, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally selecting your structures.

Will the Defense Class be able to power down their own structures?

The defense class does not have a way to individually power down their structures. However, if the defense crawler is destroyed, or dismantled, their structures will lose power until they deploy again. Also, if a player changes classes, their remaining defensive structures will stay on the field, but they will be unpowered unless the player switches back to the defense class.

Around how many maps will be playable in Skirmish?

There are a total of a dozen multiplayer and skirmish maps, set in all of the various regions in C&C 4: Polynesia, PanAmerica, Arctic, and Junktown.

Have a question of your own that you would like answered in the future? Then post in the Ask A Developer thread on the Official C&C Forums.

Are they joking again? When I heard that C&C4 is not going to have basebuilding and Scrin, I thought: "OK, maybe now they have more space and time to do more maps, more different maps, more detailed maps, more sp missions, etc.", but no, only what we have more in C&C4 than in previous C&Cs, more units, and that's all. Everything else is in smaller quantity and less quality then in previous C&C's.

Can you just smell the non-free DLC map packs?

A dozen maps beats even Generals' small stash of 23 maps, the old record-holder for smallest map selection in the C&C series (excluding Renegade).

It depends on what those 12 maps will be used for. If all 12 are put into automatch rotation and thusly are considered "tournament" maps, then its quite an improvement over C&C3/KW. Otherwise, eck.

If this game has only 12 multiplayer maps, I am expecting half the price for this product as compared to all other C&C titles currently on sale.

Because of the mediocre map design, skirmish and MP maps tend to be less, and the same goes to SP mission maps. Some may be thrown out and some may be archived for future DLC use. Although I don't think EA will charge players to play for future DLC maps for CNC4.

The more EALA devs joked on their answers to these questions, the more they are more bound to fail something out of the ordinary, only if they aren't serious about this and that. Of course, serious devs don't joke about their work.

Sure, if you only play 12 or less skirmish/multiplayer games. I thought Tiberium Wars really lacked diversity, but I think that game had 25.

Kane's Wrath has more than that, mostly 2 vs 2 maps. The same goes to RA3 Uprising. Why do C&C expansion packs have more maps than the original(s)?

All expansions had more maps, which is why I excluded expansions from my map counts as C&C4 doesn't have an expansion yet.

Because they are... expansions...

I played like 50-100 skirmish/MP games on RA3 and C&C3, and I'm pretty sure I didn't play more than 12 maps :P
