Cancelled C&C Games: What Could Have Been & Never Will Be

Recommended Posts

Over the years several video games in the Command & Conquer franchise began development, but were eventually cancelled. Games like Renegade 2 and Command & Conquer: Continuum were both in development by Westwood Studios before being cancelled and more in more recent times the likes of Tiberium was was cancelled due to quality concerns and we have also found out about other project that never saw the light of day, those being Command & Conquer Arena and Project Camacho. So here's a look at what could have been and never will be.

TIBERIUM and renegade 2 did the most pain to my heart

Especialy TIBERIUM. I just loved the commando style with Deployable squads and fighting aliens

Yeah all the Renegade 2 stuff would have been so cool. Something to bridge the gap with the Nod and Soviets story. Like this concept art simply called "Scavengers/Fallen Soviet Empire".

Man, I'd really have liked to see TIBERIUM finished. It appeared to be a game as grown up as the people that began their experience of the franchise with TD, not some candy store LSD party.

Am I the only one here who thinks it was the best decision to cancel those games?

However, I think C&C4 belongs on this list as well.

Yes.

I think the we can easily see that by the 2nd and 3rd generation, Westwood generally refined the genre to it's ultimate mechanic level. So while all the first generation games may have been average at best, the 2nd games would have learned from their mistakes and pressed forward.

You can see the clear progression from Dune 2, to C&C1 to RA1. Everything else after that is just eye candy. It's like Chess made from Simpson's Characters or Mario Kart Characters or Star Wars Characters. It's essentially the same game with different skins.

This seems to be most true with the potential of Renegade 2. The Devs admitted that they did SP first in Renegade, but once they started with the MP, they realised the potential of the genre. Taking that experience into Renegade 2, coupled with fiction tie-ins and graphical updates would probably have made an influential game to match anything they had done before. (I hope the same ability would have followed UAW2 for Petro.)

So I would be interested in all these cancelled games, especially for their refined sequels.

Besides, I liked Havoc's cheesy dialogue...

I grieve for Arena. I just wish there were some ingame screenshots showing the gameplay itself.

Renegade 2 sounded good too.

I take it Arena was the online game intended for the Asian market which the EA-execs decided to turn into C&C4 instead, for $$$.
