He sounds totally uninterested in RA1, even saying he stopped caring about it since Tiberian Sun came out and forgot which faction owned the AA Guns.

 

I can see how getting subs stuck in the shore would annoy you, but why didn't he try moving his waypoint after the first one got stuck?

 

I wouldn't say the review is bad just because he was ranting over a free mod though, as there is nothing wrong with highlighting the bugs or flaws in something that can be improved upon. The review was bad because he didn't care.

The user who put up a video of that negative review of "The Red Alert" was ShootEmUp123. He's already banned from the official CNC forums. Quite an odd review though.

My default position is fan made projects are an expression of a fan's vision and capabilities.

When a fan releases his work for public consumption, he is inviting comment from fandom.

Good commentary is non-personal, is clearly expressed/understood as the commentator's personal opinion, biased inevitably, by their own vision and capabilities.

 

IMO, compliments or criticism should include the caveate that this is the posters opinion.

What riles most people, is when the poster creates an impression that they are right, absolutely.

Whether this is intentional or an unexpected consequences is debatable.

 

I would request that we minimise this mis-understanding by communicating more clearly... but meh... this is the internet.

That's not going to happen.

 

IMO, criticism is only constructive when it is balanced by compliments and encouragements. "This is good, but it can be better."

Another critical factor for criticism being constructive is when there is no doubt of the support and belief of the parties involved.

 

It's easier to take the high ground when criticise others, it's not so easy to maintain that high ground when someone is criticising your work.

If anything, BLBPAWS has won even more respect by how he is RESPONDING and not REACTING to this discussion.

Why should anyone have to tell you that it's their opinion? To quote Maddox (with a SFW edit):

 

Any time you criticize something around someone who disagrees, they try to validate their taste in music/movies/clothing/games by reminding you that you still only speak for yourself, as if their opinions are in jeopardy of being monopolized by your own. Everyone already knows it's my opinion by virtue of the fact that I said it, no need to restate the obvious.

 

I see what you're getting at, but it's difficult to change how people relate to one another via text. It's a very impersonal medium by which to communicate.

Lets go back a step... one of the discussions in this thread was on the 'better' source material, there was some heated discussion around it.

 

This is the sort of situation I have in mind when I feel the best practise for posting comments/suggestions on "improvements" on another fan's work it should be clearly stated as their "opinion". I believe we should always avoid statements that imply or explicitly say - "this is the best way... this is the official way... this is the right way... this is the only way... " to do something. (I'm exagerating the example to make a point not accuse anyone of this practice.)

 

(When these discussions come up, I think of Picasso, and his artistic license.)
