Doctor Destiny 41 Posted September 15, 2004 SP2 ****ed my system royally. I couldn't even use Internet Explorer properly. It wanted me to find a program to run exe files. :| Don't get SP2. It's not worth the phone call or the download time. Share this post Link to post
Cyborg_Commando 0 Posted September 15, 2004 wow...hard to choose now half of you guys say it doesn't do any harm to your system and the other half says it DOES Share this post Link to post
DeadEye 0 Posted September 15, 2004 I ordered it from MS a week or two ago, and will install it when I get it.. After backing up my registry, files, game saves etc! Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted September 15, 2004 SP2 **** my system royally. I couldn't even use Internet Explorer properly. It wanted me to find a program to run exe files. :| Damn that sucks. And it was stories like that kept from installing it sooner. I think if your installation of Windows XP has been running for a long time, say 8-12 months and you have installed/un-installed lots of other programs the setup of XP SP2 may to much for it, and things will bad as they did for Fenring. The good thing about SP2 (if you have the CD version) is if your planning on formating your PC you install SP2 first since it has SP1's updates. As for Internet Explorer, digging the new pop up blocker, yeah I know I could have added a 3rd party one but now its an IE feature! Overall Internet Explorer seems to respond way faster now as well. I still don't trust the SP2 firewall though, my confidence stays with ZoneAlarm. Anyone here have SP2 firewall and ZoneAlarm both enabled at the same time? Share this post Link to post
chickendippers 1 Posted September 15, 2004 I don't use ZoneAlarm, I just use the defualt XP one and haven't had any problems. Damn ZonAlarm wanted me to pay so I could use ICS - piece of sh!t! Even with SP2, IE still sucks. Mozilla/Firefox still pwn Share this post Link to post
J-Fire_Man 0 Posted September 16, 2004 Well that's your problem for having an old/cheap-ass mobo No no no, I don't have those old mobo anymore. That's about 4 years ago when my comp is still very slow. Now, my comp is totally different, I use ASUS mobo with Ai technology, this mother board is kinda new. Bought it 5 months ago. J-Fire_Man 0 Posted September 16, 2004 Yeah, ASUS is the best for Intel. Never have any error with that mobo since the first time I bought it. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted September 16, 2004 Well SP2 has done one thing that has annoyed me. Don't be shocked. Its messed up my dial up modem, you know those older devices that some of use still use  Anyway, SP2 updated the drivers for it, but these new modem drivers, while newer, are crap! My so called 56Kbps modem that used connect at 50.6Kbps or sometimes 52Kbps now connects at 31.2Kbps everytime. And for some reason I can't rollback the driver in Device Manager or install another one. Windows basically rejects all the other drivers and wants to use the new one that clearly doesn't work correctly :x An if anyone tells me to upgrade to a broadband internet connection as a solution they can send me the money to pay the damn thing! I do know that my current modem is one of the crappy "Soft-modems". But I never has problems with it until now. I think I'll buy another modem next week. Share this post Link to post
Saracen 16 Posted September 16, 2004 It's true though, broadband is really expensive unless you live in the USA where the Mbps is becoming cheap and mainstream... I have a 750k Broadband connection.. I pay in GBP £24.99 a month for that. Downloads are great, and playing games online is so much better, but when you hear of T1 & T3+ and 100Mbps connections going at something like US $32 a month you think that the land of the free are just hogging this technology... OK they're not hoggin it, but blame the telecom providers for not getting the technology installed fast enough to allow less expense and more speed... But anyway, why would anybody need a speed faster than 1Mbps anyway??? Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted September 16, 2004 Hm...well Sonic, one solution, a bit risky, is to fully uninstall your drivers, then CANCEL anything windows wants to install and then use your drivers. Share this post Link to post

Sonic 295 Posted September 17, 2004 Hm...well Sonic, one solution, a bit risky, is to fully uninstall your drivers, then CANCEL anything windows wants to install and then use your drivers. I don't get a chance to cancel any driver install that Windows does for the modem. Not worry any way. I've order a much better quality modem, comes next week. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted September 17, 2004 Thats good. In Holland, use being a small country and packed together makes DSL very cheap, we haven't used modems here for almost 2-3 years. Geuss being small has its good points , seeing that the northern and southern tip of Holland only lie 300 KM away. Weird though that you can't uninstall those drivers...damned MS Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted September 17, 2004 I can only uninstall the modem from the device manager. If I reboot it simply detects the modem again and install the same damn driver, never letting me use a different driver. Its only a minor problem and a better quality modem should sort it out. As for broadband internet. Here New Zealand our national telecommunication provider (called Telecom) are rip off bastards, they provide us with third rate DSL connects for a crap load of dollars. If you do find an affordable montly deal the setup costs are way to much money. Then on top of that they give bull**** montly data caps of 1, 2 or 3 GB. From what I understand, and fellow Kiwis please correct me if I'm wrong. New Zealand has one of the worst setups for broadband internet in the world. We are so far behind other countries. Yet Telecom don't mind charging everyone large amounts money for the rubbish they call broadband internet. Next month one company is launching a flat rate DSL deal the sounds interesting to me, but I'm not sure about it yet. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted September 18, 2004 Hey C&C King, if you can tell me where I can get a T1 line for $32 a month, tell me. T1 is not that cheap, even here. It's incredibly expensive. Besides, I love my 1Mbps cable connection. Share this post Link to post
