it's funny i've never seen someone post up this topic..and hopefully this topic does not veer toward religion

my argument:

Earth is perfect for life. There are quintillions of planets in this infinite expanse of space. How the hell could not another one be able to support life?

They probably do, but if we haven't found them already, they're probably only bacteria or microscopic organisms. Any civilized species would have picked up the immense amounts of electromagnetic radiation emitted from Earth. And if they were civilized, they would probably destroy us or enslave us. :worried:

So, as far as I'm concerned, the only real aliens that pose a threat to us right now are THE DAMN MEXICANS JUMPIN THE BORDER :hate:

It's highly illogical and a bit arrogant to think that out of the billions of galaxies and quadrillions of planets that we are the only living creatures.

well the radiation we've let out has not reached that far out AT ALL into our galaxy...

so including our galaxy and the ENTIRE universe which is made up of zibillions of galaxies...there must be intelligent life out there...

or..intelligent life exists but we havent come into contact because it is so far away..so the info we get now could be from when that life was barely developed...you get it?

Yeah, you could be right, but the damn Mexicans make me mad still. :hate:

Lets just hope if there are aliens out there they don't turn out to be the Zerg.

I think there will be life out there. But not necessarily intelligent life. I mean if Earth is used as an example we are the only intelligent species thus far, that we know of, and hell we can't even get off this rock let alone go visit the neighbours . ;):P

Only because people like John Kerry are too concerned with AIDS. :x

Thats because its a priority. Going to Mars is just a nice pipe dream.

Well, since we're apparently all going to die from global warming, we definite ly need to find a colder home such as mars. :P

Hmm... Its a bit rocky for my tastes...

Comrade, have you no patriotism in you? Mars is the color of Holy Mother Russia! It is our duty to protect it!

Ahh... time for Vodka. :blech:

we wont all die from global warming...maybe most of us...if we dont adapt...some start a thread :P

but how could anyone deny the chances that there is intelligent life out there?

Yea, as Tree said, the universe is so big, there has to be SOMETHING.

 Oh man... are you SERIOUS? Not only is it logical, but it's probable that, even given a nearly infinite universe, the conditions necessary to replicate life won't EVER happen again. Hell, you can't even convince me that life on earth was an accident! The simple fact is that life is an obscenely complicated thing.

Imagine if you will a gigantic scrapyard... hell, make it extend from where you're sitting around the entire planet. The entire thing is piled high with various pieces of scrap metal and raw materials. Now... imagine a massive hurricane tearing through that enourmous pile of metal. How many attempts would be necessary for that hurricane to produce out of those raw materials a fully functional 747, fueled and ready for takeoff? Similarly, how many attempts would you require to type trillions of 1s and 0s to create your own copy of Windows Vista?

Even given infinite attempts, these events are SO unlikely that they will NEVER happen. Now life is even MORE of a longshot than this... and these scenarios assume that all the raw materials are there (a "primordial soup", if you will)!

Any mathematician will tell you that there's a point where a possibility is SO remote that it's essentially impossible (ie, will NEVER happen). The odds of even the simplest building blocks of life popping out of chaos pass this threshold by several factors of ten.

Oh, and Tree... could you please state your point of view without accusing any dissenters of arrogance? Thanks.

Here's my belief.

If the universe is infinite, if there's an infinite amount of galaxies, and stars, then there MUST be aliens.

If there is a limit to how many galaxies there actually are, or if there's an end to the universe, then I believe there is a possibility of there being no aliens.

It doesn't matter how utterly tiny and totally unlikely that possibility is. Because at the end of the day its still possible regardless of the odds. And nothing you say change that BWare. ;)

Besides it would be lonely if we were all alone... :(:P

Ugh. Did you not JUST read what I said there? Life doesn't come from nothing. Order doesn't spring from chaos... it JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN. Plus, it's not me who's saying that- it's lots of people much smarter than me

Besides it would be lonely if we were all alone... :(:P
And that's EXACTLY where the whole "God" thing comes into play.

Well it happened here. ;) Or am I forgetting something? :P

Genesis 1:1. (I know I know, we all knew it would come to this :P)

But yeah, the fact that it DID happen here despite those enormous odds (AND in spite of the ironclad scientific laws of the universe) is enormous proof of an active creator.

*Note for the slow: This is not religious discussion. It is scientific. Anyone who needs this explained, please just stay out of the discussion altogether. :P

Ok then, what makes you think this is the only planet God created life on then

Oh no... Don't get BWare started... :P

This is where I make my exit, before things get nasty.

Haha, there's no need for things to get nasty if we can all act like adults here!

Alpha, I haven't the slightest clue. In fact, that's a pretty good question. Bottom line, none of us knows :?.

...but we DO know that the odds of life coming into existence on its own are pretty much slim to none.

Ah, so anything we can't explain gets the "God did it" label tacked on to it. Wonderful.

I'll respond to your other post in about 8 hours, BWare. No worries. Just a short thought before I'm off to work.

That's right Tree! Man... I LOVE non-scientists who think that they have the weight of science behind their blind naturalistic atheism. YOU DON'T. You have absolutely no reason to feel superior, and creationism is, if anything, MORE rational. Any attempt to make it seem otherwise is usually blind propaganda. I look forward to your actual response.

And please... for the sake of all of us, tone down the arrogance, would you? Thanks.
