C&C 3 Designer Diary #5 - Introducing the Scrin

Recommended Posts

The latest designer diary has been posted at GameSpot. For the first time EA reveals the name and background details of the new alien faction in Command & Conquer 3. Meet the Scrin is written by Executive Producer Mike Verdu. Here is a sample.

In the dark future contemplated by Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, the world has been torn by conflict for almost 50 years as two factions battle for control of the planet. An alliance of advanced nations known as the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) has been locked in a long twilight struggle with the Brotherhood of Nod (Nod), a stateless superpower that is a strange mix of terrorist organization, religion, popular movement, and corporation. Meanwhile, the Earth is being consumed by Tiberium, a green crystal of extraterrestrial origin that is both a gift and a curse. Tiberium is a source of unlimited energy, but it is also the worst environmental disaster in history. Left unchecked, Tiberium would eventually wipe out all life on Earth.

The simmering conflict between GDI and Nod has flared into a global firestorm three times, and it is in 2047, during the third and most violent of these Tiberium Wars, that the world will change forever. Humanity will discover that it's not alone in the universe, and that it's not the only race fighting for Tiberium. With Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, we are introducing a new faction: an alien race called the Scrin. This is the first time we've officially confirmed the identity of our aliens in print--we've kept the name of the new faction under wraps for months.

Click here for the rest. Once your done reading the new designer diary you can check out the latest trailer featuring the Scrin. You can watch it streaming or download it in hi-res if your a GameSpot subscriber.

Some new screen shots were also posted, however only 2 are new to us.

That trailer is pretty cool, of course its only a teaser but still. The brief glimpse we get of the CGI stuff looks nice.

And what is that in teh first screenie in the top left corner? GDI forces and Nod forces working together? Hmm.... Though, it could just be a screenie of a custom match. ;)

eh....wonder full, lets join the bad guys with the good guys to face the "ultimate" bad guy again....

maybe Nod should just wipe out GDI, then tell the Scrin to bugger off or they'll wipe them out too

of course, then they would have to wipe the Scrin out, because they probably wont take well to threats (when do menacing aliens ever?)

Well the way I see it is that GDI is an easy target for the Scrin. Since they're all bunched up in the Blue Zones... Whilst Nod is nicely spread out across the yellow zones making it a harder target to hit... But of course once GDI are taken care of the Scrin will move on and take out Nod. So it only makes sense that Nod assist GDI...

Well until Scrin threat is taken care of then its bye bye GDI...

Then again the Scrin are more likely to inhabit the Red zones followed by the Yellow zones because of the tiberium infestation. Chances are its more likely Nod who are the ones to ask for assistance

Perhaps, but highly unlikely...

Either way seems a truce is on the cards once again...

Scrin show up and blow the hell out of the reigning space power - GDI

then land in Red zones and move to Yellow, then Blue

the entire time GDI is striking back because of loss of space forces, and Nod hits everyone everywhere, although what Kane will do about the Scrin is still an unknown.....

wouldnt it just be ubber cool when the Scrin show up and everything they have is better, but wait...they still cant see through Nod's stealth gen fields

At first the idea of a Scrin Mothership was kind of dull, due to the fact its a mothership and it would be big as in big i cant even see the battlefield, have defenses, and be a major pain in the a**. The way they designed it on the game makes it not look like a mothership at all, but as long as it excites the gameplay as promised, I wont quarrel with it.

And also from what i have been seeing from previews and screenies, the Scrin is gonna slaughter GDI, no doubt, unless they get Orca and Juggernauts quick. Nod: they got the power.

Do you think that players can capture Annihilator Tripods, since they are classified as a mech?

AND WTF!!! THE FIRST SCREENIE AND AT THE BOTTOM. IS THAT AN ALIEN TELSA COIL ZAPPING THAT SCORPION?!?

...its cool. 8)

they shouldnt be able to, tripods being alien and all (well maybe Nod could...)

but due to balance, they probably will be capturable

I'm getting halo vibe from that ring like ship if thats the mothership

It's already been stated that the tripod can be captured by engineers... makes no sense in the universe, but really neither does the engineer unit period. A single unit capturing a building??? But hey it's a balance thing! (We need some starcraft sfx for the units... so that when you click the GDI engineer after a while it says "Can we fix it?" and then break into Bob the Builder's version of the Mambo No.5!!!)

But I noticed the hint in the article that when combined with the Cutscene's homage, indicates GDI may launch some sort of tiberium bomb on Nod as a last ditch defense... This will awaken the Scrin from the forty winks.

Trailer looks cool, CGI looks cool. C&C3 looks cool. But will probably run like a three-legged dog on my comp...

(Anyone have the hi-res version?)

I dont recognise the music so maybe this could be what the new music will be like

Yeah, it's a first preview of Steve Jablonsky's work. Although it was far from growing on me, it's turning me around somewhat now. In my opinion the music fits the trailer to some extent, but in others it doesn't.

I've got the trailer playing in the background now, and although it conveys the invaison of the Scrin, it sounds rather like something I'd hear out of serious version of Eight Legged Freaks. It doesn't seem like it would work.

But then actually watching the trailer, it does fall into place. The music gives that element of Chaos. It conveys the "zOMG, they're gonna kill us all! HAHAHAHA we're all gonna die, die I tell you!" sort of craziness about it.

I do like it, and I look forward to hearing some more very soon.

*NB. This was a real time post that took 10 minutes of constant trailer viewing to come to that conclusion. I am not crazy, neither am I schitzo on the review of this trailer and the game's soundtrack.

Kinda like in BWare's story, "The Silo" everyone is gona die, just a matter of who's the entree and who's the desert, eh?

Wow... it's seems that the mothership is smaller than I thought! Mhmm... that makes me think that the adjective "Mother" in the name doesn't fit at all...

I listened to many theories, but I suppose that the Scrin will base their attack plan depending on the faction the player will choose. If we play as the GDI, they will attack first Nod, to maintain a certain suspance element in the plot, and viceversa. In any case, and that's for sure, we'll face them in both factions missions near the end. Do you remember Dune 2 or Dune 2000? It's gonna like the finals in both that games... depending on the side you choosed you had to fight with the house that was threating your family house... and in the end, with that hous plus the emperor faction. I suppose it will be the same here... but with a predominance of the alien factor in the end.

The videos are very good... the mammoth still rocks, even surrounded by alien and Nod tech! The Tripod seems very powerful... of course, is a demo: I suppose that we wouldn't be able to build so many of them... 'cause lack of funds! Eh eh!

keeping past interviews in mind, I thought there was something cool about the campaigns, the first being that you had to beat GDI and Nod to unlock the Scrin, however about storyline - will it be as it was in the past, similar, but differing depending on your faction, or like Generals, where specific campaigns come in a certain order?

I believe the GDI and Nod ones run parallel to each other then the scrin one follows them.

Well that was my understanding too. We could speculate that the con-current storyline will focus on the victories of the other side. Setbacks, defeats etc could be brought into the story, as hints to the alternate campaign. Kinda like news reports in the background...

I bring you good welcome Citizens, sad news today, as reports of a GDI blitzkrieg out of Hammerfest despite our recent great victory in Sydney today...

I would hate for it to be a parrallel universe story where we see GDI & Nod competing for the same objectives but with differing results.
