What's in your Rig?

Recommended Posts

Ouch, that must have sucked, I've never been able to convince myself to purchase a UPS it always seemed excessive to me. My little surge protector is all I've got. :P

What happen if you are using a rig that is more than 1000W? Will the UPS be insufficient as backup?

So yesterday my comptuer's OS drive decided it would go and ****ing die. :( Fortuantely all the good **** was on my other HDDs.

Anyway, so I had to get a replacement so I finally got an SSD (http://www.corsair.com/ssd/force-series-gt-ssd/force-series-gt-60gb-sata-3-6gbps-solid-state-hard-drive.html) since there was a special at the store I went to.

So now my windows uber meter is now 7.3. :D

Haha, mine's still higher at 7.4. trololol. xD

Nice choice though. How does that Corsair Force perform anyway? Seem all good in the hood?

After the install I moved some of my HDDs around and fixed some cable issues, which of course somehow lead to the mobo touching the case which caused a short cirucit. So my comp refused to boot, that took about three hours to work out. For a time there I thought the mobo, psu, video card and CPU were all ****ed, thankfully not though...

Used to take a good thirty to forty seconds to boot hte old girl, now she does it in less than fifteen seconds. :D It seems to be a little faster on most things, but a fresh install helps too.

Should have got a bigger drive I think, as with Windows 7 and all my other progs, minus games installed its taken up 35gb of my 55.7gb storage. :(

I have a 64GB Crucial M4 and it's holding its own with Windows 7 and a few apps very, very well. I have the heavy duty stuff on a 320GB drive though. One thing you might look into is your page file. It's probably gigantic and all on your SSD. Reduce its size, but that's dependent on how much RAM you have, then split it onto two drives. There is a performance boost when doing this.

Man, when I installed Windows 7 on this thing with all 16GB of RAM, my page file was ****ing gigantic. Almost 17GB of space used on that alone. I dropped it to 4GB split between two drives.

Finally got my graphics upgraded for the games coming next year and well beyond (chiefly Gens 2 and Bioshock Infinite):

Yes, it's dusty, yes, I have a couple of errant wires where I otherwise wouldn't have them, but I won't make a big deal out of it. Specs are otherwise the same as before, aside from a Samsung SSD830 128GB, which also runs like a damn dream. Firmware update was extremely easy and problem-free, too, and updates for Samsung SSDs are non-destructive and can be performed in place from within Windows on the drive itself with zero issues; just hit the update button in Magician, select the update package file, run the updater, reboot, log into Windows, reboot again, and it's done. Back to the card, there are some problems with eVGA's 670s right now but it's mainly with the SCs and normal 670s with SC serial numbers (do I even want to know how that **** happens?), any affected SC buyer will get free advanced RMA, cross-shipping, and a free upgrade to the 670 FTW edition, which uses the GTX680's PCB. All in all an epic company to work with, it's almost a shame mine hasn't had the stuttering/artifacting/driver crashes that affected some others. None of my games are very demanding by modern standards, so they all run like water. Red Alert 3 was about the only thing that would put the screws to my old card with everything turned up at my native res, but with the 670 it's almost TOO fast. :P

Guest That Guy

Just got my new setup put together.

I took (plagiarized) some ideas from ACK's rig, and some great suggestions for cost cutting options from DD.

Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

EVGA 02G-P4-2670-KR GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold Power Supply

Intel Core i7-2600 Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor

Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB RAM

Put Windows 7 on the SSD, and it gave me a 7.6 performance rating.

That plus the other things (a new hard drive, windows 7, etc) cost me a grand total of $1500 bucks USD (plus about 100 tax).

AircraftKiller and Zee Hypnotist, are you sure you can handle such a small and very fast hard drive? :P

I neglected to mention the unnecessary info, which I covered in the bottom. I'm also running a 2TB and 1TB internal and external hard drive, respectively.

MBoard: ECS G41T-M16 (I may change again)

RAM: 2 x 4GB Kingston Value DDR3

VCard: Inno3d GTS450 1GB DDR3 Green (no 6-pin and is slower than reference and I may also change / upgrade again)

HDD2: Seagate 500GB (other files)

PSU: Somewhat (better than) generic and I'm fully aware of the risks (I may also change)

Several components have changed through time (MBoard, RAM, VCard, HDDs, PSU)..

I also have other computers operational (slower).. This is my first post after several years of forum inactivity :) and in my current forum name..
