Gaping hole in the universe found

Recommended Posts

Astronomers have found a giant "hole" in the universe that measures nearly a billion light-year across. The large galactic void is empty of galaxies, stars, dust clouds and, oddly enough, even dark matter. The discovery has left scientists clambering for a plausible explanation, however, as of right now one hasn't arisen. Scientists claim that a galactic void this large is far from a normal occurrence.

So... uhhh.. Are we ****ed now? :P

It's not a video...

I saw this on Yahoo. I think it's either some kind of ****ed up black hole, or it's a ****load of aliens under a cloaking field. :P

No, the hole is simply a cosmic joke from God: goatse.

The universe is unimaginably large... Maybe the astronomers simply missed that there might be more of these gaping holes in the fabric of space... I mean, I'm sure we haven't event got a glimpse of at least 5% of the entire universe, right?

Oh I accidentally came across that image, in the past. Please God NO!! :haha:

Why on earth say that? This is some solid scientific evidence, not something made up from someone on coke you idiot!

Anyway.

This is somewhat strange I'd say. It'd be interesting to see what NASA bring up from constant monitoring of this phenomena. My question would be though whether it's expanding, contracting or in steady state. If it's the far former, how fast is this "hole" expanding? and what repercussions would it have if it continued?

I can never get my head around what these Nirvana's are about. What is nothingness, how can you describe a void that holds no matter. Even trying to imagine the void before the big bang is beyond any understanding I can think of.

It's a shame we don't have the technology to send probes which would be able to stay powered, communicate, and reach that void in our lifetime. Because my curiosity is going nuts here about this.

Oh sorry. I divided by zero.

how can they know? they certainly aren't anywhere near the "nothingness", so they don't have anything but visual proof. A bunker covered with overgrowth will look just like that a mile away, but when you get in it, it's obvious it's nothing of the sort.

Point: they can't know, they can only guess based on what they see....no "solid proof" whatsoever.

Haven't you guys read Contact? (The book the movie was based upon.) This hole in space is obviously a huge galactic-scale engineering project created by an alien consortium.

I guess the Borg are having a picnic. :P

But that seems odd a hole in space, I mean considering everything we know about the universe and... Hang on a sec, we know jack ****, so how do they know it ain't normal? Just because they haven't it before doesn't mean anything... Meh..

That's the thing, they don't know whether it's normal or not. It could be what it appears to be, just empty space, or it could be Borg, or a black hole...

Nobody knows for sure, which is why it is startling.

of the top of my head i'd say its either the place where the big bang took place, or just a gap in the radiation our equipment is receiving. it takes time for radiation to reach us so at any moment we could realize that the whole isn't a whole.

we as a species will never wholly understand the universe. the only possible understanding we will get of it will most likely come at the moment of our individual deaths, or epiphany's.

ive had at least one epiphany before, but it didnt explain the reason or meaning of the universe. simply put, i realized that it doesn't really matter what the purpose is or not because whether we know it or not it is in effect.

wonder if that means its outside of normal space and time?

It's kinda funny how there can be nothing in somewhere? is there still "Space" in that "hole" or is it simply nothing?

space=nothing

but there may be dark matter or at least neutrinos passing through

anyone think that maybe it is a super massive black hole that stopped feeding and pushed all the matter away from itself?

like a black hole that's "full"

ina sense

it happens when the black whole kind of "throws up"

all the matter that it sucks up is regularly thrown away as x-ray radiation. when it gets really powerful and abundant it blows the matter away. so, if it is a "really really really really ridiculously" big and strong black whole it could have blown the matter THAT far away from itself, which would lie in the center.

though thats unlikely considering the sheer size of the "whole." but then again what do we really know about the universe. for all we know the big bang could have been from a singularity similar to a black whole.

Space is not Nothing!! Space is black, so it has to be something. If it's nothing it's not black, it's nor white, it's NOTHING AT ALL!

Are you high? Nobody cares. "Space" is a vacuum; it is devoid of traditional things that we would find on a planet or something similar.
