40% of C&C Players Go Online Says Sean Decker - EALA GM

Recommended Posts

Hey APOC, it's always nice to see you.

I don't think any of us are disputing the stats, we're just talking about how the stats are being leveraged to mean one thing.

I'm enthused about Sean's appointment, and I do think his previous experience in online gaming will be a boon for the company.

(Excuse the rib-poking, but since us SP freaks are in the majority still... shouldn't you be engaging us in conversation more often? I'm not talking flame wars and defending viewpoints etc, just being friendly/neighbourly.... etc.)

@Nmenth just lol. :lol:

because i am not a suck up and i am pretty upset with some of Apocs words i have a retoric question to make.

does this mean because we dont spent our lives only on-line we are not hardcore players??

mutiplayer doesnt define hardcore!

let me explain you my friends what "hardcore player" is:

hardcore is the one that follows the game since day one to day 0 years after...

hardcore is the player who tries all aspects of the game and plays the one that just finds more enjoyable, and multi-player with cheaters and disconnects/LAgs isnt that place.

hardcore is the player who no matter how wrong few people are designing a new game, he still "fights" to make things right, still believes that in the end there will be more good rather than bad results, "hope dies last" right?

hardcore is the player who is active in the community as more as possible, and buys every single game of yours even that means he will have to borrow money because his is in difficult financial position.

hardcore is the player who would like one day to work with you people and sees your products not only as a game, but even as a carrier and builds his dreams around it.

so dont make it sound like we are the "black" sheep because we just dont prefer online.... its in your hands to make it more enjoyable so that we may join.

why should we feel "bad" that we are not hardcore multi-players? that gives us less volume in our voice into the community?

thats just a friendly and safe argue dude, nothing personal. ^_^

You're taking APOC out of context... "we're not hardcore, or even moderately hardcore ONLINE players"... we're "single player junkies".

Oh, really!?

I posted a quite number of comments where I heavily criticizing EALA and direction where they heading with C&C4 (gameplay mechanic, artistic design, no tiberium as resource, all time online) and you, Apoc and everybody else who visits cncnz can see that. Sometimes I feels like a flamer and that's why I like to show that i'm not some fanboy who wish death and destruction to EALA and thats why I sometimes points to things where I like direction where EALA heading with C&C4 (more dark atmosphere and gritty FMVs, return of TS units, return of tiberian flora fauna).

To summarize: If I don't agree with EALAs policy (game development related) and I don't like what they are doing with C&C4 that doesn't mean that I hate EALA and everybody who works for EALA. often I like to say that Kane's Wrath is step in right direction and most credits for that goes to Apoc (and Sam Bass if I'm well informed).

We should all remember Sean Decker had a pretty big hand in Renegade and he did help found the Battlefield franchise, so the man knows a few things about making a great online game and online experience.

All in all, Sean is a really cool guy and is bringing a fresh energy to our EALA studio that I welcome. Mike Verdu was like a close best friend to me in a co-worker kind of way, but I'm glad his shoes have been filled by someone like Sean with a really reputable successful resume. You guys know me...I wouldn't just come on here and say that, knowing he may actually read my words here, just cause. I've been in this role as C&C Community Manager for far too long to pull some cloud over your eyes, I'm pretty honest =)

I think I can safely and friendly argue that many of you that post here at CNCNZ.com are not hardcore or even moderately hardcore multiplayer, with the exception of a few. You guys are pure bred single-player universe loving tiberium fiend junkies, hehe. You're more part of that 60% that hardly goes online, but maybe you do from time to time. That's just my friendly observation. I'd have the same one at CNCDEN, Planet C&C, C&C Files, and C&C World, amongst a few others as well.

Sonic, i'd love to share more background on Sean's quotes, unfortunately it's not my place to disclose. All I can say is, as the GM of our studio and someone who is very honest, realistic, and upfront, I know his data was driven from very accurate metrics and research.

Though, whenever they say some crazy stat like 1 in 4 Americans are obese, I chuckle =) How do they know this?!!!!

Hmm, APOC, knowing that quite a number of C&C fansite communities are more SP-based fans, I'm hoping the devs pay more detail with better and more interesting gameplay.

Btw what happen to the beta key awards for Tiberian Twilight names?

The Beta is not public yet. When we are ready to open it out wider to the community, those who won the Tiberian Twilight contest will be amongst the first few waves. Still got a little while. We are kicking off another naming contest next week, with another opportunity to win a free pass in to our Beta, and simply the fun of naming a unit =)

2POC is taking a more active role in the community overall so I can focus on bigger picture items behind the scenes, but I'll do my best as always to be around more. We get sucked in to our official message boards because well...that's our home. You can always ping me at [email protected] and yell at me to come on over, I don't mind.

Silverthorn, got your e-mail, will try and get back to you soon.

I was being sarcastic when I said "junkie" by the way, it's really just another way of saying fanatic.

You are already reached a beta stage of development of C&C4? If that is a case, man, that was fast: in only a few weeks from pre-alpha stage moved to beta stage!

guys guys i didnt miss the point, ok we are fantatics or junkies or call it whatever you want with single player-offline, but most of us got that level of fanaticism because we would love to spend more time online and have cool battles but thats just not possible for lots known reasons.

what i really dont like is big companies thinking that in multiplayer is all the money! well i have news for you, its not!

if you dont make a storyline so attractive and a universe so cool to keep the players online no matter what you do online you will fail! Game intustry has lots of examples in that!

Blizzard's online domination (besides wow) in RTS games 10+years now, is because they have a fracking amazing universe and storyline in their games, and they pay a HELL of attention to Single Player and Skirmish and Balancing. those are the foundations to build a successful online RTS experience, and in cnc4 people are making excuses and tries to degrade single player balance and skirmish and story meaning.

give us a "cnc drug" so damn good that we could not resist play online and we will be more online and we will find INTERNET for your allways-online stuff, even if we are leaving into a damn cave ^_^

make people want to go online, dont force them to go online...thats the difference.

with love.

J.

i think Apoc means,, that its not "The" BETA yet ready for the people, what they play inside may carry the world "Beta" but its not the Beta that you and me are knowing and wait for....

i like when the EALA team stays quite they do more work than giving out interviews....and thats more exiting.

i believe the Public beta will be ready around 2009-2010 holiday season...:thumbsup:

in terms of CNC, im all about single player. real-time strategy CNC style for me in terms of base-building is more enjoyable with a certain grace and personality to it (irrelevant to C&C4? HOPE that changes). with bases, im an architect AND a war-monger. aggressive art.

when it comes to multiplayer games, i prefer something more fast paced, for instance an FPS like Counter-Strike: Source.

*i prefer a quicker multiplayer because you still preserve the essence of a game, but do not waste valuable "real-life" time having to satisfy certain objectives.

so what exactly was your topic of request about?

Asking for numerous CGI of course.

But I don't 100% put my trust in them, they promised more CGI to appear in RA3, but sadly, that promise was completely shattered when the game was released, thus shows that the dev team did not put much effort into many CGI, most of them are wasted for the single 1st Allied mission. Nothing else.

For C&C4, I can't be very sure, EA promises but most of the time they intend to shatter them, unlike Valve, they kept their promises for real without actually breaking their fans' hearts.

i am totaly with you on that (as i told you many times before)

Generally i believe that if you are about to end the Tiberium Saga, at least do it with the appropriate "respect" to the series and do the very best in all the aspects of game!

including fabulous CGI, creating a game like that its an Investment not something to just spent as less money as possible, and hope for great sells.

you get what you give!

Remember, the dev team doesn't have unlimited time or resources. They have their limits, and they're trying to give you the best game they can with what they have to work with...

well thats why i am telling those "restrictions" should not Exists, or at least be far more away... ;-) SC2 style....

You'll have to go straight to the top with that one i'm afraid. EA central is where all that stuff is decided i'd imagine. and they won't be reading any random fan forum any time soon.

i think the company already decided how much time & money (same thing) they want to spend on the game. Also, SC2 is too many years in the making, IMO...

Well now the biggest question of those 40% of C&C players go online, will a fraction of the 60% of C&C players who play offline will play C&C4 online all the time due to that new 24/7 online method?
