8.4 Earthquake Hits Japan

Recommended Posts

Guest Rabbit

Anybody hear about this? I'm hearing the affected countries due to a Tsunami will be New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others.

You can go to google.com to see the warning label.

Seriously though, I'm on the west coast of the United States and they're saying it might hit us. I'm packing everything to evacuate in about an hour. I just wanted to post this here to see who else has heard of this.

Kiwis, I hope you're all good. You're in the blast area.

If you all don't hear from me for a few days, it's because my home has been flooded. May god bless you all, atheists.

I don't think you'll have to worry too much about it, it sounds like the waves aren't as big as predictions.

Erm. Report from the PH: NO TSUNAMI HERE.

At least, here at the southern portion. Dunno bout the northern parts though. Seriously though, 2012? Really. It's times like these that remind of the single most important quote I know of...

"**** happens."

And they don't necessarily have any reason for happening to, other than causing ****.

Yeah saw it on the news, pretty damn nasty. :o

No official warning here, they're not expecting anything 'significant'. But still advising caution. Seems as though the ring of fire is really going off lately.

I saw some footage of this on tv and it is terrible. I read that a whole train dissapeared and a boat as well with like 100 people. Crazy.

Like I said...

**** happens.

Ain't no stopping it when it does; but I do feel sorry for Japan. Lately its been going on a downhill slump, it seems... And this just worsened matters.

Actually I read that the magnitude was actually a 8.9 in most news sources, which is incredibly large.

The tsunami I read isn't as more terrible than the one seven years ago when Indonesia was struck by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake that triggered a huge tsunami to areas that weren't even warned at that time.

Last reports now put the quake in Japan at a solid 9.0 magnitude so it's now the fourth largest recorded quake in our history, rather than seventh. Man, this **** sucks.

I saw the news on midnight about what happened. Very large earthquake and then a tsunami right after words. My sympathies to the victims.

Latest news is 7.9 though, said in an interview with a local earthquake scientist. I feel sorry for Japan, one of the most awesome countries in the world (if not the most awesome).

Important to know, though, that this is the second time something like this happened to Japan (but this is worse).

And as for the magnitude, it's put at roughly about 8.8-9.2 in estimates. But it's not the quake or the tsunami that made the most damage... Rather it was the fires, just like the Hanshin earthquake (1995). I mean, it is one thing to be trapped beneath debris, but it's worse to be trapped with fires raging around you.

Saw some footage on CNN.com too; the tsunami was carrying flaming debris as well.

I'd say when the consequence of both things are.. death. They are equally bad situations to be in.

Getting trapped in debris is like 50/50... With fires, I'd say 80/20 for death.

Update from MSNBC (Rachel Maddow Show):

The nuclear problem may be in equal scale as the Chernobyl disaster.

By your logic, dying in your sleep is just as bad as dying a very slow death by torture.

Being burried under rubble with painful injuries and waiting for days until you starve to death is just as bad as burning for 1 minute, or die from smoke poisoning in my opinion.

If there are two reactors struggling to cool, as CNN.com puts it, would it be twice as disastrous?

The worst part of it is that I hear they'll have this type of quakes in the next two years :o

Don't believe some reporter's worse case scenario, they have no brains of their own and only interpret what they have been told by everyone else.

I'd say the odds of the Japanese power plants even coming remotely close to the Chernobyl disaster is very slim.

Yes you have to remember the media always sensational EVERYTHING. When it calms down it not interesting anymore and they ignore it.

i've heard Rumors the Earthquake could be felled at Chile, Equador and other contries, There are even peaple it could be felled at Here, Brazil. I personally did not fell anything here, so i can't confirm anything.

yeah, the things are pretty ugly bad there in Japan

The reactors in Japan will not see a catastrophic meltdown. There are failsafes in place and it would never be anything close to Chernobyl, or hell, even Three Mile Island.

Seriously? I don't think that there would be a declaration of a State of Emergency for the two power plants if it WASN'T SERIOUS. Seriously.

There's always a chance something goes wrong. In this case it's just best to evacuate people anyway.

Modern nuclear reactors are infinitely safer than the crude cardboard lean-to with four nuclear cores they called Chernobyl.

Nevertheless, when dealing with radiation, you have to be extra careful, as it is better to evacuate for nothing than to stay and realize too late that it is worse than expected.

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, which is the largest nuclear power station in the world, suffered the largest earthquake to ever hit a nuclear power plant. All that happened was a single transformer ignited, but they still shut the place down for over a year to upgrade the earthquake resistance. That is what is known as better safe than sorry.
