Portal 2 - the 2011 game of the year?

Recommended Posts

That may be still inaccurate as there are more epic games coming out this year, such as Duke Nukem Forever, Fear 3, Max Payne 3, Deus Ex 3, Modern Warfare 3 and perhaps Diablo 3. PC Gamer already called Portal 2 the best game of the year. I am sure some of you still wanting to play Portal 2. So far the Metacritic average score is 95% through 14 reviews and around the same average in PS3 and Xbox360 platforms.

IMO, this game is even shorter than Modern Warfare 2 despite the pathetic $49.99 USD price tag plus you have to pay additional DLC for additional gameplay. In addition, it's the same gameplay, the same source engine (a little improved), and not a lot of new features.

If I were to take the deal, I'll have HL2: EP3 and then bundle the retail package with Portal 2, Counterstrike source, HL2 Deathmatch, Day of Defeat and all HL2 source sdks for $49.99. The HL2 Orange Box did not come with Counterstrike Source, HL2 Deathmatch and Day of Defeat source. So sad for Valve not going for Half-Life: The First Decade.

The only game that's a big game with the shortest content, Team Fortress 2. Big patch still has less maps to play with. Although I did own it along with the HL2 Orange Box for around $30, it's a painful 8+ hours of updating with the patch (since I am using DSL connection).

perhaps Diablo 3.

AFAIK, Blizzard said they won't release anything this year.

So sad for Valve not going for Half-Life: The First Decade.

More like the only decade. I heard HL is planned as a trilogy, with the episodes counting as the third game.

Portal 2 Game of The Year? Yes of course.

I'm deeply in love with it already. (what's very rare these days)

I can't believe you complain about TF2 being patched. It's one of those games that have been spoon fed a ****load of great updates and extra material by hard working developers, which have increased the overall experience.

The fact that you have a low-speed connection is unrelated and a problem of your own.

Portal was great, but I just can't get interested in Portal 2 at all. At least not yet anyway. Maybe once its been out for awhile and the hype dies down.

Way to early to say that.

Personally I didn't think THAT much of Portal. Sure it was unique and fun, but hardly what I would consider a GOTY contender, and as you said there are a lot of other games coming out so its going to be tough.

Mass Effect 3 - FTW!!!! ^_^

I've just completed the singleplayer storyline, and I'm totally blown away. Your'e damn right it's going to be tough, tough for any other game to even reach comparable levels of epicness that is Portal 2.

Critics love Portal 2, but the fans don't....

Critics and users of Metacritic are strongly divided over Valve’s Portal 2. While the game currently enjoys an average critical rating of 95/100, users currently rate the PC version of the game 6.2 out of 10.

PC users are sore over four points: the game’s length, the supposition that it is a console port, day-one downloadable content and Valve’s “potato sack” marketing strategy.

Similar story from Kotaku http://kotaku.com/#!5793543/the-people...anning-portal-2

I heard it can be finished in about 4 hours.

In the end I don't really care, I'll play Portal 2 eventually I guess. I just wish Valve would stop ****ing around with Left 4 Dead crap, now Portal, and just make Half-Life 3. Forget about HL2 Episode 3.

But aren't the HL2 episodes supposed to be the third part of the trilogy? I heard so.

LOL. I was wondering why there was so much Portal 2 stuff going on at all my haunts, turning on Steam I find out its just been released! ^_^

In other news, Portal 2 is cheaper on Steam than NZ retailers. :)

If Valve was like Blizzard, they would have gotten three teams working on three separate games, one on add-ons, one on Left 4 Dead and one on Half-Life.

Concentrating separately on several other games that Valve did develop (instead of Half-Life) is going to ruin their organizational management and their coordination. The staff may be getting older in slow steam but I can tell that Valve may be getting too hesitated and tired to get Half-Life back on track. Why? Their interest in Half-Life is becomingly decreasing.

If only Half-Life 3 has a portal gun, co-op mode, puzzles, skirmish game modes with AI bots for MP maps and RPG elements combined from previous Valve games, that should do it for a new Half-Life game.

I still want EA to create their HL game one day using the source engine. Since EA is the publisher/distributor for Valve's games, how come they can't make one out from Valve?

As a commercial economics student, I have to bitch about the fact that this is a sales strategy and not a marketing one :P

I happen to be a member of the PC Gaming Master Race and I am deeply offended about how short Portal 2 is campaign wise even though I have never played co-op. I am even more mad that it was also released on consoles.

Why are you mad about Portal 2 being released on other consoles? If that game was ported, the text should be as sharp as in the consoles ones in a HD TV. Talking about co-op is a new thing for Portal, but I think Half-Life should deserve it first.

This game was delayed a couple times for a little more polished work. Now that type of development is incomplete, leaving loopholes in the DLC to order to get it, and missing elements should have been integrated into the finished developed game. Sure it's true, this Portal 2 game is not long enough (or well-developed enough) to justify its value and price.

As of now, the user score rating in Metacritic is a fair 7.5 and there's yet to be more critic reviews on the way.

I was being sarcastic. Portal 2 was one the best games I've ever played on the 360.

Is this how gaming sites report news these days? :o Resorting to gutter trash talk, using foul language and insults. Whoever is in charge of Destructoid should be ashamed.

I personally canceled my subscription to PCgamer after a managment change saw the magazine go from semi decent to using words like "n00b, lol, haxor, etc " game related press has been going down the ****ter for quite some time now where ever the source

I just forgot that the valve fanboys outdid even the Blizzard fanboys which is something.

It is too short (another new trend, just like the gutter talk making its way in to video games), and it was overly hyped.

Having seen some of last years goty nominations, if it wasn't for valves ego id say i would support it for goty as it wasnt half bad at all.

One thing I forgot to mention, what about the Bejeweled 3 game? Isn't the Bejeweled series the world's #1 puzzle game, not Portal?

Even Portal 2 may be become a contender for the game of the year, it's not even noticed to be called the world's #1 puzzle game.

lol, but Portal is a first person adventure/puzzle game. Totally incomparable :P

I just finished Portal 2 SP last night. I think it easily deserves it's GOTY predictions even this early in the calender year.

Like Portal 1, it's pretty good and pretty funny, but it's not worth the praise everyone is giving.

^this (excluding the funny bit as its not appropriate for some games) can be applied to almost all of valves games.

I finally bought the PC game at a sale price of $29.99 USD at Fry's. It also appears that Amazon, Best Buy and Gamespot are also selling the same price as well. The console versions of Portal 2 are also on sale at around $39.99. I didn't have the chance to play it since I got other work I have to do.

Looks like Valve isn't gambling like Activision after all despite the good sales.

Also I did not like the game rating downgraded from "T for Teen" to "E to Everyone". No source engine game being released by Valve was a rated E game.

I played Portal 2, I played Crysis 2. These two are my highest ranking games at this point of time, IMO. I probably give it to Crysis 2, sorry! :P

Current game of 2011 for me? Magicka! Neither Portal 2 or any currently released game of 2011 have sparked my interest.

But 2011 is filled with interesting upcoming games like The Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3!
