The Uncertain Future Of The C&C Franchise

Recommended Posts

With our hopes of C&C 3: Tiberian Twilight all but dashed this week. I have to question the future of our beloved game and it's franchise... As my friend Cabal from CNC World said:

You guys do realised it will be a few years before we see anything from the next c&c?? The team that would be working on it are working on LOTR now, and then an X-Pack after that

A few years is an extremely long time to wait!! And knowing EA's strategy of creating Franchises we are more than likely to be seeing a C&C: Generals 2!!! We don't want that!! Everybody knows what they want and that's a sequal to Tiberian Sun!!

But what if EA decides to kill off the C&C franchise in that time? What would that mean for site's like CNCNZ.com..... As I posted in the C&C3 topic, here's some possible options:

if EA does disband C&C and kill the franchise, I can see CNCNZ.com possibly being converted into a petroglyph supporting site... or if EA kill the C&C name but keep the game, it could be converted to following that....

Or if both Petroglyph and EA release similar RTS games based on the C&C mould "IF" the C&C name is killed off.... would CNCNZ.com be split down the middle or force an allegence to one of gaming developers.... who knows???

The future is uncertain and it kills me to think of that... but CNCNZ.com will have to evolve in some way or another if the C&C franchise is killed off.... Question is how would we go about it????

I imagine alot of us do worry about the future.... We all do.. even our great Webmaster, Sonic has voiced his concerns:

It does tell us one thing, EA have forgotten about C&C, the franchise is too value-able to simply let it die.

EA has us all walking on eggshells, and it's not right to keep the fans in suspense like this.. EA have got hold of the wrong end of the stick if they think the LOTR RTS is going to attract the millions of C&C fans... it will do a few, maybe, but this isn't C&C!!!

But Cabal isn't telling us something. He's been to EALA and he's got a sarcastic tone to his typing... Quotes being:

If you looked carefully in one of the booths near Marks office you would have seen something. I was told by one of my contacts who works at EALA that the screen on EALA TV is something that they made as concept art yes, but was put there to get people talking. If you checked durin the sideshow presentation it was taken down... and wasn't there on thursday evenin either hehe. kinda says sumin

What was this something near Marks office... it wasn't the C&C 3 pic we saw earlier... so what was it :?

We did see the C&C logo more than a few times upstairs but i cant tell you on what hehe.

What are you hiding Cabal? Whatever it is you know something and you are not going to share it.... but I will probably find out

On a final note there is something that will give us hope... deezire also went to EALA and posted something about his travels... the most relevant being:

Why LOTR:BFME? Well because (i) it just totally frickin rocks, even at this early stage, and (ii) because it uses SAGE and editing it will be the same as Generals and Zero Hour - so that will tie up the editing community nicely until another C&C comes along - oops, did I say that? Nah..

But the future is all about walking on eggshells, and the people who went to EALA might know something we don't.... watch people and EALA with hawk eyes, they may hold the key to our futures...

Really i couldnt care less, i am a big C&C fan but im also an impatient C&C fan....

If LOTR is as good as Cabal syas then i'd probably end up playing that...

The C&C community seem desperate at the moment, and any news of a new C&C seems like gold...

A fresh new war RTS with a good storyline will do... Thats where Petroglyph comes in....

FORGET EA!! the sequel will be crimson dawn! crimson dawn will single handedly OWN any C&C game that EA will ever come out with! (unless they decide to buy it off when it is done)

Damn thats a lot to read...

I wanna see some sort of C&C game some time in the near future.. Like before I'm 100.... Though I guess I'm pushing that... More like 200...

You are already dead in that time. And maybe, CnC has been ruined by EA.

You think that's bad you should see the articles I used to write. Most were pure blocks of writing with no quotes, and they were twice as long as that!!!

I believe Crimson Dawn will give the community the boost it so rightly needs. If Wolfy or Bliss want more coverage on it post news in the community forum or better still contact one of the news updating staff or even Sonic and we'll cover it for ya.

If Crimson Dawn, plays as well as it looks, and you are hoping to make movies with Joe Kucan (Kane) and Frank Klepaki doing the music score then everybody needs to know... Once you have those 2 helping you out, contact every PC games magazine around the world... and who know's I might be Crimson Dawn's number 1 supporter and act as a CNCNZ.com and UK advertiser!

I dunno if you've made a banner for the ads that come up on our site, if not make one, contact Sonic or GP hosting and they'll do their best to get it up.... Guys, if you pull this off, and get Joe and Frank... hell I'll pay money for it!!

I decided around the time Generals was released and Westwood closing that I would keep CNCNZ.com going as long as I knew C&C games were going to be produced. I felt I could stick to it and build up to another C&C like I did with TS, RA2 then Renegade.

However if I don't see any indication in the next 8-12 months that a new C&C game is coming there is a chance that CNCNZ.com probably won't be around this time next year.

It will either be closed or turned over to someone else.

Thats the stone cold truth!

Don't take this a sign that I will bail out soon though, I'm still committed to this site, I've devoted the last 7 years to it and I hope it continues for as long possible.

I think you're all being a bit to pesemistic here, I take each day as it comes and I don't think about the future. If I had to quit the community tomorrow, I would, but I wouldn't worry myself and others about it for weeks before-hand.

Interesting way of life you have... Though I seriously doubt you're fully commited to it....

Well yea, I stick to that in the community, but in real life I do have a bit of forward planning - but still I don't have a career planned or anything.

Me too. I want to see a continuation of the C&C storyline - but if they do, won't that mean it'll be the last C&C? Or will they make RA3 after that. Hmm... only EA knows.

I think it is rather positive we haven't heard anything about a new C&C yet - if they are already working on it then perhaps it won't be as rushed as Generals 8)

I've been thinking of Generals as more of an engine test than an actual game. EA only really wanted a proper engine to make an LotR RTS and Generals was a test to get it stabilised and optimized before they went on to focus on BfME, and Zero Hour was the tack on that the team felt was needed as Generals wasn't really generals without it. But that's really my theory, noting more. altough there's likely a little bit of truth to it, but I wouldn't say it's the whole story.

I kinda agree Phreakly, though Generals was still a good game, it was a best seller due to the new engine, ZH was the much needed expansion to boost the engine popularity even further.

Cnc lies in the hands of freelance programmers and artists. EA may buy and sell the finished product, but the only way we will get new games is through our skilled and talented friends.

And they are all doing a great job... I think as in terms as today stands we've never had it better as a community for Mods. There's so much choice out there and us gamers who have great connections and plenty of hard disk space, we just download them all :D
