Nmenth 291 Posted April 21, 2011 lol, you make it sound like we're out to get them Nmenth. It often seems that way. I don't mind little spiders, but something like a Tarantula, with its hairy legs and stuff.... Yeah, another reason why I'd never live in Aussie, great to visit, but not to live... Too many things that can kill and eat you... See, this is the stereotyping that give spiders a bad name. The Sydney Funnel Web spider bites 30-40 people a year, and since anti-venom for it was produced in 1980, the death rate is a whopping 0%. In the fifty or so years before the anti-venom, there were around 13-14 deaths, which is still less than 1%. The Redback bites more people, but only 6% of bites are even considered serious enough to need anti-venom at all, and there have also been no deaths for several decades. Another Australian spider, the White-tailed spiders, are also given a bad reputation... falsely. They are not guilty of the accusations against them and are not dangerous of doing much more than causing an itchy sore. Even the "deadliest spider in the world", the Brazilian Wandering Spider has an unfair reputation. Its death rate is slightly higher than 0.1% with a whole entire 2% of bites requiring anti-venom. As for the poor tarantulas, they don't even usually bite in self-defense, they kick abdominal hairs in the face of their oppressors. The worst part of spider demonization is that even ignorant teachers, medical doctors, and (non-arachnologist) scientists, people that are considered authoritative, perpetrate many of these stereotypes and myths about the little, mostly-innocent creatures. Plok 327 Posted April 21, 2011 You still can't beat the fact that the big ones look really creepy. Especially the hairy ones. (I'm beginning to presume you have one at home). Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted April 21, 2011 (I'm beginning to presume you have one at home). I have no spiders as pets, if that's what you mean. Did you see my spider posts in Video of the Day? Share this post Link to post

Inferno 22 Posted April 22, 2011 See, this is the stereotyping that give spiders a bad name. Good to finally see someone stand up for those poor, tormented little spiders. Share this post Link to post

Plok 327 Posted April 29, 2011 D00d, three of six major Croatian TV channels were broadcasting this at the same time, with different commentaries. I don't think even the news at noon were watched at all because of this Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted April 29, 2011 I have yet to find one person who actually cares, and that includes British people. Of course, it kind of looks like purplezocomscrin7 does, so maybe I just found one... Share this post Link to post
Plok 327 Posted April 29, 2011 If you must know, 2 billion people watched that on TV. 1 million or so were there. Share this post Link to post

Of course, it kind of looks like purplezocomscrin7 does, so maybe I just found one... Excuse me? I posted it because it's the picture moment of the day. There's nothing sinister. And one more thing, I am not British but I am Chinese. Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted April 30, 2011 <Insert conspiracy theory about the crown and their links to Nazi Germany!> lol. On a more serious note, it was a rather impressive ceremony, but I couldn't help but cringe thinking of just how much money was wasted... Even during so called 'modern' times the Crown and Church still hold it over the plebs... And the plebs love it... Share this post Link to post
