I guess "violation of civil liberties" doesn't mean much, eh?

Why are you so incredibly quick to defend the "civil liberties" of people in direct contact with known Al Quaeda members overseas? This is nothing but terrorist surveillance, and it is completely within the power of the executive brance to order. They aren't listening to you. Calm down.

The Anti-Terror laws are making us loose much of our freedom they are suposed to be protecting. Australia now has the toughest Anti-Terror laws in the world. Howard even snuck in new anti defamation laws with the terror laws so we can now be arrested for saying bad things about the Prime Minister.

Alphabear, if we are truly losing our freedom as you claim, then can I ask you to offer a single example of a person whose rights have been trampled on? If this is such a horrible trend that will surely destroy us all , then why aren't we seeing all these terrible things actually happening?

Of course you can't actually come with anything besides vague generalities and liberal talking points. This silly alarmism over the Patriot act and other post 9/11 laws is almost entirely groundless. Australia may be a different story, but at least in the US, there is nothing to be particularly concernted about.

The chances of being killed in a car accident are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay larger than being killed by a terrorist act.

Okay.... that's a bit random, but are you implying that terrorism isn't a serious threat? Thousands of innocent people were slaughtered in an instant on 9/11, and massive damage was done to our economy and infrastructure. Don't even try to diminish the severity of terrorism

Dude, he's saying that there's a greater risk of death in a car collision than death by terrorist. He's not diminshing it in anyway... just merely saying we have a better chace of death elsewhere.

How do you know it's nothing but terrorist surveillance? Right, you don't. However, it's not the tapping that bothers me. That's gone on for years, and won't stop any time soon. It's the fact that the NSA can tap anyone at will without a warrant. That is what truly bothers me. However, no cases have been reported that they overstepped the previous laws... as far as I know, the NSA still attains a warrant.

You're tto quick to judge what I'm really against.

I can describe your point in three words: Invasion of privacy.

I definately agree with that.

I definately agree with that.

It is not invasion of YOUR privacy. The program is "invading the privacy" of those who for some reason are talking to terrorists overseas. The only reason why you could ever honestly oppose this program is if you're exploiting it to attack the president or you really just don't know anything about it.

Fenring, got it. I agree and am uneasy with it if there isn't some sunset to it, but I also see a definite need for it. And yeah, nothing specifically bad has happened yet... nothing even questionable. Our civil rights are doing just fine

Oh and I'm sorry, but I couldn't help this:

However, it's not the tapping that bothers me. That's gone on for years, and won't stop any time soon.

Is it just me, or does Bware sound defensive of things bent on destroying freedom? seems so to me.

Fair enough. It may well be the case in Australia that there's reason to be concerned, but from what I know, America is doing just fine.

And there's RKCoon with the debating ability of a 5 year old

What the hell does that mean anyway? What are you implying? Why don't you grow up and learn how to make an actual point?

The Patriot Act is "bent on" protecting your freedom you moron. Do you have an actual reason or point to deny that? If not, just shut up.

I wouldn't say there's a definite need for it. I still see this as a tad excessive. Absolute executive power is not what we need and that's the aim of this administration. Nothing questionable has happened but that doesn't mean something nefarious won't happen.

That's absolutely untrue, and you can't back that up.

True, but frankly I don't have much reason to believe that anything will. I happen to believe that it's the ultimate aim of the administration to make America secure and safe. I still don't absolutely trust the government, and like all responsible citizens I keep a careful eye on them, but I also have no reason to despise them and attack them at every turn... like so many seem to do.

Don't get me wrong- I'm no apologist for the Bush administration

  Ya see what i mean kids? make valid points and comments and you get fed such rot, but he expects everyone to absolutely see his total point of view.

YOU prove that its not the case -- but since its impossible ill not hold my breath. We have in fact already shown that this IS the case -- Bushel supporters merely refuse to acknoledge this, and live in utter denial. ;)

Really? wow, sure had me fooled.

Fortuneately for me and the rest of Canada, its not OUR freedom thats at stake, merely the americans. Pity, that while less than a third of the american people are willing to toss away thier freedoms in the name of "security" and "protection", much like many countries and states of the past, it is and is going to happen -- unless peopel actually get a clue what all IS really goin on. And, while there are clauses (vieled attempts really) within the Patriot act, among others, to try yet again to screw with other countries, it wont fly. The original feeling, tho largely unspoken, after 911 was "OK, let the americans get thier revenge". Thats fading real fast and isnt gonna hold much longer at all.

as a side note, seems the more scathing i get, the more flustered others get eh?

Hey moron- the burden of proof is on you. It's logically impossible to prove that something is untrue. If YOU make the claim, YOU back it up. Do you not know that this is how it works? Wow.

Just because I don't personally hate the man doesn't mean I agree on him with everything. You do realize this, right? These aren't sports teams. It's far more complicated than that.

Yes... and YOU would know, right?

Again, I challenge you to point out SPECIFICALLY how we're "tossing away our freedoms." This is what I talked about earlier dude... it's called debate. You can't make silly claims like that, fail to back them up, and then make them again with no proof. It's just a waste of time

Man... you came SO CLOSE to offering a bit of proof there before drifting into another tangent. Keep working on it.

"Vieled" attempts, huh? Okay, this is still vague and worthless, but at least you're hinting at proof

as a side note, seems the more scathing i get, the more flustered others get eh?

This proves what? Only losers take pride in annoying other people. If this is what you consider fun, I really feel sorry for you. You must be the life of the party

Funny. thats what Napoleon and Hitler both said bout Russia. keep in mind how many geographical traights we have in common to them. :D
HAHAHA!!! You would actually compare yourself to RUSSIA?

Russia is relevant to world history.... Canada has never been. That's why we haven't seen any Napoleons dying to conquer it

A good friend of mine was at a War Protest here in St. Louis, Missouri. He happened to have an Anti-Bush shirt on. (It is a shirt for the band Ministry, with a hammer slamming on Bush's head) Guess what? He was taken by the "Law Enforcement." The shirt was removed and he was told that he can never wear something like that again. Wait a second. What is this?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That is our FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT BEING VIOLATED.
