Plok 327 Posted August 2, 2012 Remember when we featured the C&C Generals Project for Minecraft? The project got much larger - there are three people working on it: Snowy007, Titan304 and our former news updater RainXc. They've been making Red Alert 2, Generals and even some Tiberium units and buildings. There is also a C&C Generals server for Minecraft at the IP address visible in the first image. Here is some of their work: ' rel='lightbox'>http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDEAAqikeoE/UAIYYx6t1yI/AAAAAAAAAKI/7Pe-lnYBlOE/s640/Airfield.png ' rel='lightbox'>http://cdn.planetminecraft.com/files/resource_media/screenshot/1230/KA1_3067260.jpg Click here to visit their blog, where you can see and download their work. 2 Share this post Link to post

AZ-Stalker 88 Posted August 2, 2012 Hmm, I think the Kirov is my favorite. I love what they're doing with blocks and C&C these days. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted August 2, 2012 Ok so you build all this stuff in Minecraft.... then what? It makes no sense to me Share this post Link to post
AZ-Stalker 88 Posted August 2, 2012 (edited) It's not about the aftermath or goal, its about building things. How do you make something look the way you want it to look? How do you tackle technical issues? It's pretty addictive once you get the hang of Minecraft's creative mode. I remember building things late at night going "just one more block, just one more block" and all that. Edited August 2, 2012 by AZ-Stalker Share this post Link to post
PurpleGaga27 40 Posted August 2, 2012 Not interested in C&C Minecraft. Feels like those are made out of looking-like graphic legos. Share this post Link to post
Tore 33 Posted August 2, 2012 Not interested in C&C Minecraft. Feels like those are made out of looking-like graphic legos. That's the entire point of Minecraft, buildings things with blocks Share this post Link to post
Aircraftkiller 9 Posted August 8, 2012 There's also artistry in learning how to draw, or picking up a free 3D package and modeling the same stuff... Except you can create anything when you draw or digitally model what you're thinking of, whereas you're constrained to some block shapes in "minecraft". Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted August 8, 2012 Yes, you can model with computer graphics these days, and come out with near-photographic quality images... and yet, for some reason people still prefer to use paints on a canvas. How is that logical? In case you didn't catch it, the above was sarcasm. Just because one medium produces more realistic results does not mean using a relatively crude medium is not just as artistic. For the record, I don't play Minecraft, nor am I compelled to, but I will say it is not pointless. I personally find nothing interesting in paintings, charcoal, sculptures, etc., etc., but to say it is not art, or that people doing it are wasting their time when they could be learning how to use computer graphics and 3D printers instead would be moronic. Or at the very least, narcissistic. Share this post Link to post
Aircraftkiller 9 Posted August 8, 2012 You seem to have missed where I mentioned that there is artistry in drawing; you also missed the collection of traditional art on my portfolio, located in my signature. I don't have any objection to making blocky artwork with a weird game. I just don't see the allure of creating art with that program. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted August 8, 2012 You seem to have missed where I mentioned that there is artistry in drawing; you also missed the collection of traditional art on my portfolio, located in my signature. I did not miss that, I was actually pointing out the hypocrisy by directly mentioning it from the opposite perspective. And I couldn't care less what kind of artwork you have done, it is irrelevant. I don't have any objection to making blocky artwork with a weird game. No... you just heavily imply that they should learn how to draw or use 3D modeling... but not object... I just don't see the allure of creating art with that program. So either you were objecting and are now backtracking, or you are replying to a topic you don't care about because you like to hear yourself talk (metaphorically). I'm betting on a little bit of both. 1 1 Share this post Link to post
Aircraftkiller 9 Posted August 8, 2012 Heaven forbid that one harbor an opinion, much less propagate it on a forum. And where's this "hypocrisy" stuff coming from? You should really read up on the definition of words before you use them. I never said it wasn't a form of art to use "minecraft" to create objects. I said "you're constrained to some block shapes in 'minecraft'", so I find it to be pointless coming from the point of view of a mixed media artist. Does that mean it is pointless to everyone? No, it doesn't. I speak for myself only, unless I clearly state otherwise. You could level the same criticism at Sonic regarding anything I've said. It's cool if you don't like me. Don't pretend you're making valid points when you're simply trying to get one up on me. If you're going to do that, pick a battle where you don't have to twist my words 720 degrees before your point even remotely starts making sense. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 291 Posted August 9, 2012 Having an opinion is fine, stating that opinion when the only purpose it serves is to flaunt your narcissistic opinions is what is pointless here. And arguing semantics with me has gotten very old already, I assure you that I know full what the words I use mean. The problem here is that you don't think they apply because you are so full of yourself, you can't even perceive the fact that you are perpetually critical even when the occasion doesn't warrant it. The next time you see a topic about something you don't care about, you should think to yourself; I don't care about this, I should not say anything here because my social skills are on par with that of a Tasmanian devil on phencyclidine. I shall comment on another topic where my input actually matters and has relevancy. Now you also compare Sonic's comments with yourself and say I don't like you, so I will respond to that. Sonic did not say this game has no purpose, he said it doesn't make sense to him. You, however, implied that time would be better spent learning another medium. Very different. You can be certain, if Sonic said something I didn't like, I would not hesitate to speak my mind then either, I have before. He, unlike you, is careful not to say anything controversial (which is not to say controversy always needs to be avoided, he just prefers not to start it). As for whether or not I like you, that has absolutely no baring on why I would I choose to debate with you. I'll have you know that I do not like a lot of people, and most of them don't know it. It is not my custom to respond to people I don't like, I respond to comments I don't like. You just happen write a lot of inane posts with the arrogance dictators would have trouble mustering. 1 1 Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted August 9, 2012 Guys, please don't start another pointless argument here. Keep it civil ok. 1 Share this post Link to post
Nyerguds 102 Posted August 9, 2012 Ok so you build all this stuff in Minecraft.... then what? It makes no sense to me Actually, there are mods like the Zeppelin Mod that then allow you to fly those babies around There's also artistry in learning how to draw, or picking up a free 3D package and modeling the same stuff... Except you can create anything when you draw or digitally model what you're thinking of, whereas you're constrained to some block shapes in "minecraft". I fail to see any difference with actual voxel creation, in that aspect. Minecraft doesn't have "some block shapes". Besides some rare exceptions like chests and fences, it simply has one block shape, which is, quite simply, a block. As it is with voxels As for the colours available in those blocks, well, taking all different kinds of available materials, plus the paint palette available for wool, it's quite diverse, and even then, people can use their own texture packs to tweak those. 1 Share this post Link to post
Aircraftkiller 9 Posted August 9, 2012 (edited) Right, but that seems pointless - any 3D modeling package, free or no, can create boxes that you can "stack" to create pixel art. You can use any textures you find online or create yourself versus predetermined textures loaded with the game. I'm just not seeing the "hook" here - what's so enticing about creating pixel art blocks in this game versus a program dedicated to doing 3D art? Nmenth: I stopped reading past "narcissistic opinions" since you're more interested in trolling than you are in debating the merits of what I've written. Edited August 9, 2012 by Aircraftkiller Share this post Link to post
Nyerguds 102 Posted August 9, 2012 Well the point remains that this is a game. You'll be walking/flying around creating stuff. That kinda happens to be the point of Minecraft in general. [edit] And as I already said, Minecraft allows modifying the textures pack. Share this post Link to post
AZ-Stalker 88 Posted August 10, 2012 (edited) People want to have fun with going around and creating stuff in an easy way without having to "learn an art" sort of speak. I know a lot of people who really like Minecraft solely because you can just jump in and place blocks around without any effort or 3D design knowledge of any kind. You jump in, enable your voice chat and have fun with other people. Dig out ore and build a house... it's as simple as that. But that's just the tip of the iceberg of course. It's meant to be a game for all ages. @aircraftkiller - Would a 7 year old kid seeking fun with building things from his imagination want to use a 3D modeling program or rather a game that has become super popular where you just place blocks around to create stuff (not to mention have a lot of laughs with a few friends while doing it)? Aircraftkiller 9 Posted August 10, 2012 Somehow I doubt seven year olds are the demographic which creates Red Alert 2 voxels. ;-) Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted August 10, 2012 (edited) I honestly don't even give half a **** why people do this, or where they find the time to do it, it's just a bit of awesome. Stop making things unnecessarily complicated. Edited August 10, 2012 by Inferno 1 1 Share this post Link to post

Saracen 16 Posted August 11, 2012 (edited) Either way, Minecraft is a great game. It has a charm all of it's own. I know I've certainly lost countless hours to it over the last year or so, and I purchased it back when it was just going into Beta. I liken the creative mode to be similar to that of Lego, but in a digital form. It's not supposed to be an art package or anything like that. The time and effort that goes into these things is impressive, and I applaud the creativity that has gone into them. It's harder than it looks when you're one small guy, and you decide to build a giant Megastructure. Before Mojang implemented the superflat world option. I built a life-size football stadium on my own that took well over 3 months to finish. 2 weeks alone was spent on landscaping a huge area so it was flat enough to build the spectator stands and the field as well as sufficient area around the construction so it didn't look like it was buried in a pit. After 2 months solid construction it then took me a further month to deck the entire interior of all 4 stands out, and add redstone circuitry to opertate lights and sticky pistons. The latter is the real art in Minecraft. Someone with enough knowledge of circuitary in that Generals airfield for example could easily add a button or switch which which open the hanger door, and move the entire jet in and out at leisure. Or in case of the Kirov (if built high enough), can have the bombs replaced with TNT. So a flick of the switch in the bridge could ignite and then drop it to the ground before explosion. Although knowing the very limited scope of Minecraft's physics, they won't all drop in tandem. Either way, 6.97 Million players can't be wrong. This indie title puts the sales of a lot of AAA titles to shame, and new features still keep coming. The recent 1.31 patch is arguably a mini-expansion pack or DLC in its own right, and yet they still don't charge for it. With that in mind and in terms of the money spent to game time played ratio, this is arguably the best value game ever developed. Edited August 11, 2012 by Saracen Share this post Link to post
Aircraftkiller 9 Posted August 11, 2012 Either way, 6.97 Million players can't be wrong. You're appealing to popularity. That's a logical fallacy. Simply because an arbitrary number of people play does not mean it's a great game, nor does it make it good, or bad, or really anything at all. It's just a game that some people enjoy. Others find nothing interesting about it at all. You can keep adding new features to it, but the fact remains that it looks like a game from 1995 (I'd argue that System Shock from 1994 is more visually powerful than "minecraft" is) and really only appeals to a certain audience. I can see the point of building Lego-like objects, but again: I'd prefer to build something out of Legos at that point. Share this post Link to post
