Update: As of March 2011 the classics section on the Official C&C Site is no longer online. You now can get all classics C&C freeware releases right here http://www.cncnz.com/features/freeware-classic-command-conquer-games/

The classic Command & Conquer games now live on thanks to a special freeware section being opened on the Official C&C Site. Not only can you download the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert, both Tiberian Sun and Firestorm are now available as free download.

Today is a very special day for Command & Conquer fans world-wide, and for some of us, we can call it an early Valentines Day. We might swear the timing is coincidental! As of this moment, you can now officially relive the glory of Tiberian Sun & the expansion pack Firestorm on your PC with our new freeware offerings. And to add greatness to this measure, we've also included our original freeware releases of Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert 1 on one simple, nostalgic, CLASSIC page.

So click here and score your free download of Tiberian Sun and Firestorm.

Does it include Covert Ops, Aftermath, and Counterstrike this time?

No but seeing how they add firestorm to TS, i think this will happen soon

This has been a great idea imo. TS was for me, the best C&C ever.

Great!

It would be even more awesome if EA would release the source code to the old games. That would be the ultimate present to modders. ;)

From what I understand APOC knows about this. As in someone suggested it to him. But only he can confirm if they will be made available or not.

Yes its both TS and FS in full. Nothing is cut from the games. Its 100% as was released in 1999. Its simply a case of downloading the RAR file, extracting it and running the shortcut that gets created for you and the game is ready to go.

Didn't know now that classic games become freeware. Guess its a matter of time before Renegade and RA2 becomes the next freeware, lol.

I sure hope so, the free C&C1 & RA1 were fun, but it'll be even more fun when the expansions are included. I just really wish I could get my hands on the so called "dinosaur" mission in C&C1 & the "Ant" mission in RA1. Yeap, I remember the old FMVs from there, oh wait, that's from Retaliation, another expansion pack. Lol, how can I forget the funny video about Carville complaining about the troops fighting about the giant ants.

Tiberian Sun's storyline, cutscenes, CG scenes, and environment was definitely the best in any Command & Conquer game. The move to make it freeware is definitely a great idea.

Well, I was just wondering because TD has been freeware since 2007 and RA1 has been freeware since '08 and it would have been nice if they came with the expansions this time. :cough:

Although I do see you can get the expansions from the CNC World link in the install instructions. -edit- Instructions, which, I believe should be included in the downloads (partial instructions are in the TS download). EA isn't exactly well known for keeping their online website content for more than a year (just see the broken links in the two CNCNZ news announcements I linked for example).

Very very nice gift from EA. :) Btw, why they do not release it as ISO's as Tiberian Dawn and RA1 anyway ?:)

This may be the greatest thing EA has ever accomplished.

Only to be surpassed when they release RA2/YR as freeware. :P

hmmm i dont know how to feel about it.

from one hand i really feel exited, and stuff like that

from the other i belive a game looses a little of its value when it becomes freeware! and thats not so good. for example sc1 is still for sale, for almost a freeware price 5-10euros but it

gives the game a value that the fact you need to spend some money to buy it!!

for me the best (after ws time) cnc games is Tiberium Wars & kanes wrath, it will be playable for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG period of time!

and those should only become freeware after 10+ years, but they should be also supported for 10+ years too!

without wanting to turn away for the topic, cnc4 it has a LOT of pottentions specially with its arsenal of units, BUT the fact that you will have new mechanics and way points doesnt make it simplier than cnc3 or kw when it come to focusing on battles!

i mean i dont really enjoy a beta game, because everyone is rushing like crazy to get to the TiberiumNodes and you dont have time to explore the gameplay, have huge battles with tiear 2-3 units etc, the games i feel dont last long enough!

with tiberium fields you had more time even if 2 oposite harvesters where meeting in the field, it wasnt such a deal!

i dont know i really want to play the skirmish to get used to it because i dont like DoW2 style games and i am trying Months now with the beta to like it, and the fact that i am geting used to it very slow, means that eather i have forgot how to play (dough it, i learn faster dow1+dow2) or the game doesnt help me to enjoy it and there are mechanics that confuses player and dont allow him to enjoy battles.

all above is my personal opinion always, that may some disagree, fine. thats why we call it personal. :)
